The Public Libraries Act of 1850 (And the 1853 Act in Scotland) established the principle of free public libraries for the self-improvement of all citizens in Britain, irrespective of their income.

Opponents of the Act believed public libraries would become sites of social agitation: extending education to the lower orders of society would lead to libraries becoming working class "lecture halls" full of radical ideas and demands.

It's #LibrariesWeek - and we have a few facts about our wonderful Children's Libraries for you! Did you know Norwich created its first separate juvenile library in 1889? Books were sent in boxes to schools ready for teachers - a bit like an old school version of @NorfolkELS!
In 1921 a new Children's Library was created where librarians taught lessons to children, and issues of children's books rose to 41k a year. In '52 the Children's Library was relocated to a brighter and more spacious area showing how seriously Norwich took children's literature!
Completed in November 2001 following the 1994 Norwich Central Library fire, The Millennium Library made its home in @TheForumNorwich, and included a dedicated, enclosed children's area that hosted weekly babytimes and storytimes as well as school visits.
