Storytime: For years there was a family of kids who would walk to my library. We knew things were rough at home and we tried to create a safe, validating, fun place for them (like so many others.) There were about 8 cousins, siblings, half-sibs, ages 5 to 16. Then lockdown hit.
I thought about them a lot while we were closed, worrying, hoping someone was taking care of them. After we re-opened, they didn’t come back. I heard they’d moved. Maybe out of state. Now and then we’d all speculate on how those kiddos were. And then! Today! Guess who walked in??
These two smiling teenagers walked up to me and said Remember us? And they started naming all their siblings. I nearly fell over! They’re living in a mix of foster and kinship care; the oldest is on her own and doing great. She has her own car now so they decided to come see us.
So, this is a thing that happens. A major publisher declined to sell books to our state library's consortium at the consortium level. This is a publisher with probably THE most popular adult fiction author. (1/x) #LibraryLife #EBooks #Books

Individual libraries can still purchase their books and share them. But buying multiple copies is beyond the budget of many libraries. Meaning there will be gazillions of holds on their books and our state library can do nothing to help us fill them. (3/x)

I was asked by a friend today about what I was doing the last few weeks as she could not understand how I was busy 8+ hours per day with the library closed. Here is a little run down of #librarylife as a #WFH #programminglibrarian /1
The first few days of closure were spent emailing dozens of people (performers, speakers, authors, publicists, community partners) to update them about the cancellation of programs that had been in the works for months. This was pretty depressing. /2
At the same time Senior Staff, of which I am a part, were making plans about how to pivot and make sure we could still serve our community. This meant investigating new software, services and figuring out the best ways to communicate with staff and community members.
My library has no librarians of color. The supervisory chain in the library has no POCs and never has. Yet our student population becomes more diverse each semester. #LibraryLife

I'm the only Latinx person working in my library and have been for years. I'm one of only 2 POCs employees and have been for years. In my 17 years of working in an academic library, I was often the only POC on staff. #LibraryLife
I can share that today we're adding another POC to the library staff and I'm so happy because he's Latinx and because I was on the hiring committee. Our top two candidates were POC so I was thrilled that whomever we chose, they would be a POC.
