In view of the increasing number of corona infections, the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has declared a health emergency for the second time since spring. The state of emergency should come into force from next week.
It is a "very limited and largely preventive measure," stressed the President. The state of emergency enables the government to impose new measures to contain the corona pandemic. As an example, de Sousa cited traffic restrictions.
The social democratic government wants to discuss concrete measures on Saturday evening in an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers. The talks include a nationwide night curfew and public fever measurements in certain locations.

For the time being, the Portuguese government has waived plans for the mandatory use of a Corona app. The controversial project still needs to be discussed further, said Prime Minister António Costa in a television interview.
The Corona app has been downloaded around 2.3 million times so far. That is only a good third of what the government is aiming for in the country with a good ten million inhabitants.
That is why Parliament should vote this week on a law that makes the use of the program for mobile phones mandatory. But the idea is criticized from many sides as impracticable.

Thousands of workers have protested in Portugal for higher wages. At rallies in various cities across the country, they called for the minimum wage to be raised to 850 euros.
At 635 euros, it is currently lower than anywhere else in Western Europe. The protesters also called on the government to do more to secure jobs that are at risk due to the corona pandemic. The number of unemployed in Portugal had recently risen by a third to around 400,000.
The largest umbrella union in the country, the CGTP, called for the protest. The government of Prime Minister Antonio Costa has launched various projects aimed at getting companies through the virus crisis. This also includes measures to secure jobs.
