Some learnings I've learnt living in these here pandemic times:

1. Everyone should have access to the internet during a pandemic. Oh, and funny hats.
2. These past ten years the dust bunnies under my sofa and bed have been pretty busy building thriving little towns and villages.
3. Screaming into the abyss is a real thing. My neighbour just doesn't get it.
4. If you want really nice weather all summer long, just declare a pandemic lockdown.
5. Amazon will pack two lightbulbs into a microwave-sized box. Can confirm.
6. Right wing politicians really don't like not being in front of people. Which is kind of weird, since they don't seem to like people.
7. Sometimes I find myself wondering if the person who invented the salad bar sneeze guard back in olden times truly knew what they were on to.

At the fast pace of our lives, and in a time that we are so switched on or wired, that switching off and relaxing are not luxuries, they are necessities!!
Exhaustion, time poverty and sleep depression are worn as badges of honour today! It ain’t normal or cool just because society has normalised it, it’s highly abnormal!!
Burn our doesn’t give you a prize, but it indicates that you have neglected all of you! There ain’t anything cool about that. Never feel guilty or apologetic, about taking rest or relaxing.

1. I was head of research and analysis at @trendwatching for seven years

advised brands from Google to Marriott, and many in between, on consumer trends

spoke at conferences everywhere

here is the simple, powerful framework my team used to spot emerging trends

*thread 👇*
2. New trends in human behaviour and mindset are made of two building blocks

(i) change and (ii) fundamental human needs

the key?

new trends emerge when *change unlocks new ways to serve fundamental human needs* such as convenience, value, security, or status

let's go deeper
3. When we seek to understand the world around us, the central challenge we face is change

we live in a world of seemingly fast and disorienting change: technological, social, economic and more

it can throw us off balance

Stuff I've done during self-isolation:

1. Named all my houseplants after members of the royal family. Set up my two small artificial Xmas trees so I could have a Harry and Meghan too.
2. Wrote letters of complaint to all of Doug's MPP's using only elbow macaroni and Elmer's glue
3. Invented the Tuna and Shreddies McMuffin
4. Tied 12 empty pop cans to 12 lengths of string, tied the other end of those to my belt, and walked around all day pretending I just got married
5. Used 10 rolls of paper towel and a large grapefruit to open my very own bowling alley
6. Locked myself in the guest bathroom for a whole day and pretended I was Jesse from the last season of Breaking Bad
7. Strung one of my guitars in reverse order and played Stairway to Heaven to see if I could hear a secret message
8. Cheerios jewellery and a new Etsy site

I really have to thank @lizzo for making this headline possible. What a great way to finally make the local news. #twerkwithlizzo #noregrets #livingmybestlife

Note two errors: 1. I am an assistant professor currently going up for tenure, not an associate prof. 2. @lizzo is already a superstar, not a rising one. #StreamTruthHurts 😘
Error 1 was corrected. 🙃

☠️How to Spot A "Hope Vulture" [THREAD]

There is a dangerous breed of marketers that I like to call “Hope Vultures."

These predatory marketers prey on the hope of vulnerable people.

They overpromise, underdeliver and give "marketing” a bad name.

Here's how to spot one:

1/8
1: They claim to know “secrets”

A Hope Vulture will promise to reveal the keys to wealth and success. They’ll assure you that if you just knew “this one weird trick” or “secret” that you too could live the high life.

Don’t fall for it. It’s a trap.

2/8
2. They overemphasize how “easy” it is

A Hope Vulture wants your money, fast.

When pitching you on their bogus product, course or pyramid scheme, they’ll assure you that it’ll all be “so easy.”

“No time? No experience? No skills? No brain? No problem!”

Don’t buy. Run.
