My essay on #LoujainAlhathloul: So clamorous was her courage, so loud her refusal to break that it made her more of a liability for the #Saudi regime inside prison than outside, so they sent her home, where her enforced silence would be a reprieve for them
feministgiant.com/p/for-loujain-…
Loujain’s astonishing courage and tenacity have long wrong-footed the Saudi regime. In 2014, when she was 25, she was arrested for the first time while attempting to drive across the border from the United Arab Emirates - where she had a valid driver’s licence - to Saudi Arabia.
In March 2018, the Saudis considered Loujain such a threat that they had her rendered from the UAE, where she was studying. She was stopped by security officers as she drove on a highway near her uni in Abu Dhabi, taken from her vehicle & forcibly returned to her home country.

My new essay: For Loujain, Who Terrified a Monarchy feministgiant.com/p/for-loujain-… #LoujainAlhathloul
Loujain al-Hathloul is the hero of her own story. So clamorous was her courage, so loud was her refusal to break that it created more of a ruckus for the Saudi regime inside prison than outside, so they sent her home, where her enforced silence would be a reprieve for them.
She is not a “goodwill gesture” or a “concession” to Biden by MBS. Women are not bargaining chips to curry favour with your biggest ally so that it continues to arm you to the teeth and look the other way as you commit war crimes with said weapons. feministgiant.com/p/for-loujain-…

I wrote this soon after #LoujainAlHathloul (sentenced to ~6yrs) and other women’s rights activists were arrested in 2018. The absolute monarchy in #Saudi Arabia is punishing them because the regime does not want people to think feminist activism works google.com/amp/s/www.nyti…
Feminism terrifies authoritarians. The absolute monarchy in #Saudi Arabia is punishing #LoujainAlHathloul because her activism works. She and other women’s rights activists are the reason the driving ban was lifted. The regime wants us to believe that freedom is given not taken.
The #Saudi regime wants to make it clear that it was not the courageous advocacy of those feminists that led to lifting the ban on women’s driving, but rather the grace of a crown prince engaged in ferocious revisionism. #LoujainAlHathloul #FreeLoujain

I was invited by #Women20 #W20 #SaudiArabia (an official #G20 engagement group) to moderate its summit in October. I have declined as I stand in solidarity with women's rights defenders in Saudi Arabia & beyond, including #LoujainAlhathloul, who remains in prison in the country.
Per her sister @LinaAlhathloul, from Aug. 31:

"My parents visited Loujain today. She was on a hunger strike for 6 days after acknowledging some detainees are allowed to call and not her. Her health was deteriorating extremely during her hunger strike."

I wonder if @ColoradoBRT members got to ask @rbalsaud why her government has kidnapped two #Saudi children when they hosted her at their PR boondoggle “roundtable” last month?

Take a look at the @ColoradoBRT board members -weapons company & businesses who are making bucks w #Saudi while they whitewash its crimes by inviting its ambassador to chitchat in #Colorado - yes talking bout you #DavidEddy @Boeing @RRobinetteCO @ATT @chschmidt5 @Deloitte

#SamarBadawi, a #Saudi activist who was arrested several times. She is behind bars since July 2018, during the crackdown on female activists who were calling for women’s right to drive & to end the male guardianship system. Samar faced various violations & ill-treatment.
She was banned from any kind of contact with the outside, even with her family & lawyers, faced verbal abuse & sexual harassment, & tortured with electric shocks. She is now in jail over her calls for laws which has been amended! #ReleasePrisonersOfConscience

Prominent #Saudi women's rights activist Loujain al-Hathloul has rejected a proposal to secure her release from prison in exchange for a video statement denying reports she was tortured in custody, her family said google.com/amp/s/mobile.r…
Hathloul, along with at least a dozen other women's rights activists, were arrested over a year ago. Rights groups say at least 3 of the women, incl Hathloul, were held in solitary confinement for months and subjected to abuse including electric shocks, flogging & sexual assault.
Hathloul’s siblings allege that Saud al-Qahtani, a senior adviser to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who has also been implicated in Khashoggi's murder, was present during some of the torture sessions and threatened to rape and kill her.

For those who have been following Jamal #Khashoggi's case--

Back in October, senators triggered the process for possible sanctions on Mohammed Bin Salman. They gave the Trump admin 120 days to respond re: MBS's role.

Trump admin has not responded.

The deadline is tomorrow.
More background on the possible Magnitsky sanctions for MBS: #khashoggi: politi.co/2r0pscJ
If the Trump admin helps Mohammed bin Salman evade consideration for sanctions, it will only enable MBS’ brutality.

After murdering Saudi Arabia’s most prominent journo and a @washingtonpost writer, what would stop MBS from murdering other members of the US press? #khashoggi
