Another episode of "Will #Putin outlive #Lukashenka?"

Yesterday Putin received several reports by video call, but it was only Lukashenka's health report and his appearance before the audience that drew the president's keen interest. Putin was told about Lukashenka's...

ailing state and was shown photographs and video footage. The president, hearing that Alexander #Lukashenka had mentioned in his speech the shooting down of four objects over the Bryansk region, said: "Such a faggot, he is teasing while drowning".
2/5 Image
On the whole, #Putin liked #Lukashenka's morbid view and let loose several frankly mocking remarks about it. As for the prospects of life of the Belarusian dictator, Putin expressed confidence that "the elk" was still able to stand on his hooves, and that was good.

🧵 Aznur 🇦🇿🇦🇺🇧🇾🇩🇪🇷🇺

This is a story of stolen taxpayer money, a Brazilian restaurant in #Berlin, corrupted parliamentarians from #Australia, heavy military trucks used to invade #Ukraine, the crackdown of the protests in #Belarus and several key figures of the #Azerbaijan regime ImageImageImageImage
Years ago, @OCCRP published raw data of the so-called #Azerbaijan laundromat, a massive money laundering scheme that was used to send stolen taxpayer money abroad.

What puzzled me where these payments. Apparently, the Azerbaijan state opened the company "Aznur GmbH" Image
Indeed, such a company does exist. And even more than that - it is art of a network of companies. One of the companies in the network is "Brasil Gastro GmbH", a company that runs the restaurant "Brasil Brasileiro" on Ku'damm, Berlin's most prestigious street. ImageImage

The self-proclaimed President of #Belarus 🇧🇾 , Alyaksandr #Lukashenka, made yet another derogatory comment about Ukraine's President Volodymyr #Zelenskyy. 1/5.

#InfoWatch #AgainstRussianLies
This time, he spoke about how Ukraine allegedly facilitated the sabotage of a #Russian A-50 airborne early warning & control aircraft operating from #Belarusian territory to monitor #Ukrainian airspace. 2/5
#Lukashenka believes that #Ukraine 🇺🇦 and the CIA were behind this incident, and that "there is only one conclusion [to take from the incident]: President #Zelenskyy is just a louse”. 3/5

Reportedly 6 UAVs were launched from Chernihiv region and #Kyiv region. 4 were shot down on approach, 1 was shot down over the airfield and its wreckage fell on the maintenance equipment.

All the threes. Day 333 of this dreadful war in #Ukraine

But there are not 3 sides. Succinctly you're against #Russia killing civilians, or you're in favour.

Being "neutral" is just allowing war crimes and worse these countries likely profit from the genocide, just as in WWII.
So this is the daily thread for Sunday 22 January.

If you had a busy Saturday and main stream media didn't tell you what you need to know, I can help! Scroll though yesterday's thread right here:

#SaveUkraine #StopRussia

#Russia still losing above average numbers of troops every single day even though today's figure is lower than of late.

600 more estimated (by #Ukraine) to have been killed in the last 24 hours

5,470 Russian militia have died in the last week.

Dear subscribers and guests of the channel! Yesterday, #Russian President Vladimir #Putin arrived in the Republic of #Belarus with a large delegation. #Lukashenko had to greet the "dear guest" with pomp and organize a big welcome.
1/11
#Lukashenko opposed the visit of the #Russian delegation and did a lot to try to disrupt this visit. The range of issues that #Putin and Lukashenko discussed, in open and closed formats, in the presence of members of delegations and in private, was quite extensive.
2/11
The #Russian President personally tried to convince the #Belarusian usurper of the wrong approach to conducting separate negotiations with the West and #China over the "elder brother's" head.

It's Day 276 of #Russia's full invasion of #Ukraine.
It's also Holodomor Memorial Day, commemorating those starved to death by Moscow's regime in the genocide of the 1930s.

This is the daily news thread with all the news, views and analysis on events around the illegal war...
Another fairly quiet night. Long range missile attacks by #Russia confined to outbursts every few days it seems, while artillery pounds the usual targets in southern and eastern #Ukraine

1/5 Concerns are mounting that 🇧🇾 troops could join 🇷🇺 ’s forces in 🇺🇦. But this course of action would be extremely risky – for both #Putin and #Lukashenka.

2/5 Given the task #Sunak faces to stabilise 🇬🇧’s economy without further immiserating the population, he will likely decide that unnecessary conflict with Brussels is something he had better avoid.

If our partners put forward a strict demand about the inadmissibility of strikes by ZSU deep into the territory of the russian federation, then #Ukraine is obliged to convince its partners by providing them with arguments and showing them the benefits of changing its position.
At the very least, #Ukraine should agree with its partners on the need to prepare for a devastating strike on military targets on the territory of the Republic of #Belarus.
The military group that the Kremlin is trying to deploy on the territory of the Republic of #Belarus must be destroyed in the places of concentration of troops and equipment.

Dear subscribers and guests of the channel! Yesterday, #Russian President Vladimir #Putin held several operational meetings with representatives of the leadership of the military and security blocs.
1/13
During the discussion of the process of "partial" mobilization, #Putin approved the proposal of the Ministry of Defense to make the second wave of mobilization "alternating". According to the plan, the second wave of conscription will take place alternately.
2/13
For example, several constituent entities of the #Russian Federation will announce the beginning of the second wave. Then, in a couple of days, several more will follow and so on, until it covers most of the subjects. Then, the third wave will be launched.

The problem is not that #Putin directs #Lukashenka's actions - he does not. The problem is that #Belarus for #Russia is transforming into what #DPRK is for #China. But this is Russia's problem, not #EU's.
The problem for #EU is it has long outsourced decision-making on key issues in regions of strategic importance for Europe to #US (which,in turn, falls prey to US domestic politics).
EU won't recognise it. Instead,it keeps looking for "#Putin factor" in every new challenge it faces
The lesson for others to learn is that turning states into failed entities has long term consequences. Lukashenka weaponizing migrants-wrong.
Europeans refusing to face consequences of their own policies (Libya, Afghanistan, Syria) - the migrants ARE exactly that - irresponsible.

What is known so far about #FR4978 emergency landing. 1. It was close to #Lithuania border when someone informed about 'explosive'.
2. #Belarus authorities sent Mig-29 fighter jet to intercept the plane and force landing in #Minsk.
3. Former editor of @nexta_tv was on board

4. Before the flight Raman Pratasevich (ex @nexta_tv ) wrote to his friend someone showed suspicious interest in him at the registration in #Athens airport.
5. A Russian-speaking man presumably attempted making a pic of Pratasevich's passport, then left the queue abruptly. 2/
6. Currently Raman Pratasevich works as an editor-in-chief of Belarus Golovnogo Mozga web resource which is considered 'extermist' by authorities.

Short summary of political situation and latest trends in #Belarus (THREAD)
1) Solidarity & self-organisation in society still highly present: crowd-funding for victims of repressions, solidarity chains/actions, humour as important solidarity tool, assistance from diaspora ImageImage
2) Still no single political centre for coordinating protest moods => many different levels of self-organisation, actions often spontaneous, horizontal communication gains importance. People are getting used to actively using public space for political messages Image
3) State ideology took over many oppositional methods: peaceful rallies (though, people brought there by buses, often/mostly under threat of dismissal from work/for payment), flashmobs/activities in social media, solidarity chains, humour. Main messages: stability, unity, order ImageImageImage

So, so, @markuspreiss.

If #Belarus regime makes concessions, we will be fast in legal-constitutional territory. Scenarios: 1. Supreme Court accepts appeal to review elections results (problem: Loss of time/momentum. Ballots were destroyed and can be falsified) 2. #Lukashenka resigns (parliament must
approve), new elections in 30-70 days (art81 Constitution), Prime Minister will be interim head of executive (classical transition challenge: old institutions supposed to now organise honest elections. Central election commission tainted, but with proper public srcutiny, obser-
vation, etc. it may be possible); other conditions important (TV coverage, free assembly, release of political prisoners, registration of candidates). Challenge for opposition: Agree on one candidate? 3. President could be impeached by parliament, but complicated slow path (art88

Short note on ongoing events in #Belarusprotests and probability of Russian intervention in #Belarus (to the resque of #Lukashenka)

1. Assurances from V. #Putin #Russia are aimed to be more repellent for protesters (as we see - not exactly efficient) less - real readiness 1/n
2. It's also playing for time - for now #Russia has its own ally in the top of #Belarus vertical of power; so its logical to keep up with him and observe devwlopment of events.

3. In the same time - #Russia is making #Lukashenka more and more dependent on Russian suppport... 2/n
...in the situation of lack amy support, from any side (so in case he stays - Russian pression will become more effective and smoothe on him).

4. Cost of such an intervention would be much bigger for #Russia than any advantages of it. Lukashenka is not so precious for Putin 3/n
