Happy Black Futures Month!

First launched by #M4BL and our partners in 2015, Black Futures Month is a visionary, forward-looking spin on celebrations of Blackness in February.
During #BlackFuturesMonth, and always, we center Black, queer, & transfeminist perspectives. Black queer & trans people have long been at the forefront of dreaming and expanding what is possible for our movements.
We're uplifting political prisoners and supporting them in their efforts to reclaim freedom. True liberation for Black people will be a future in which all of us are free.

Today, we reflect and honor the lives taken on October 20th last year as Nigerian forces opened fire on #EndSars protesters, killing multiple people in addition to the dozens who had already been shot and killed throughout the demonstrations.
Nigeria's #EndSARS campaign brought global visibility to the corrupt Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) who have tortured and killed Black children with impunity for decades.
#EndSars, an inclusive and empathy-driven movement across the youth spectrum, is about more than police violence; it’s also about addressing root causes, calling power to account, changing government structures in Nigeria, and more.

It’s (thankfully) been a minute since I was active on night twitter, but the @LPE_Project #UBI symposium is so rich, I’m eroding my own norms 🙀! Time to talk about our lovely monetary consumption (& production...) economy!
First things first, read the intro! @NoahZatz did a characteristically thoughtful job introducing analytical themes and outlining the contours of the ensuing conversation. You simply love to read it. (Also...the links…the links…the memories...🔗🍻)

“Even the most progressive nation-based approach to basic income faces a fundamental justice challenge in the reality of human mobility.”

“...cash transfer programs created in response to #Covid19 may have some insight to offer.”

Congress is trying to ram through reauthorization of the #PatriotAct and #FISA surveillance. These mass spying programs haven’t saved any lives, but they HAVE been used to crack down on protesters and political dissent.

Here’s a short history …

1/

saveinternetprivacy.org
The first wiretaps were used to spy on a cop-turned-bootlegger in the 20’s. The public loved him for defying unjust Prohibition laws, and he never used violence against the public or the police. But the federal government wanted to make an example.

2/

newyorker.com/culture/cultur…
By the 30’s, the federal government was using wiretaps to spy on political activists, helping corporations prevent workers from unionizing in protest against unsafe working conditions and economic exploitation.

Even #Amazon thinks it's good PR to pretend like they're doing something:

“This is nothing more than a public relations stunt from Amazon. But it’s also a sign that #facialrecognition is increasingly politically toxic, which is a result of the incredible organizing happening... Image
Amazon knows that facial recognition software is dangerous. They know it’s the perfect tool for tyranny. They know it’s racist–& that in the hands of police it will simply exacerbate systemic discrimination in our criminal justice system." - ❤ Fight Deputy Director @evan_greer

Do not use @zoom_us to organize. Preferably, do not use #Zoom for anything at all. ✊ @hackinghustling

.@signalapp, Wickr, @WhatsApp, @telegram, and @KeybaseIO (recently acquired by @zoom_us) are encrypted messaging platforms. The first four have 1:1 calling. Wickr has group video chat, and @BlueJeansNet has this capability (but it's owned by @Verizon 🤢).

Today the racist in chief ordered the police to shoot tear gas and rubber bullets at peaceful protestors in Washington, DC who have been tirelessly protesting the murder of George Floyd and demanding justice for black lives. 1/
The police stormed the crowd on horseback to clear the streets for his photo-op so this pathetic man could leave his bunker to walk across the street and pose in front of a historic church holding a bible. 2/
The bishop of this church just went on national television to denounce him and his abuse of sacred symbols as a backdrop for his message, since it is antithetical to the teachings of Jesus Christ. 3/

Here's a thread to keep track of some of the action emerging among foundations I'm following. Not a comprehensive list, just a place for me to track my coverage....1/n
On March 17th (seems like a long time ago) @MJTPhilanthropy and I tracked some of the initial response from large foundations and a community foundation that had a ready-made response plan - for a mass shooting - that it put in place for the pandemic philanthropy.com/article/Grant-…
A preliminary take on corporate giving from @CECPtweets suggested that many companies were responding. In the great recession businesses pulled back, but giving recovered more quickly than private foundation grants philanthropy.com/article/Compan…
