The annual pothole news cycle is upon us, so lets take a deep dive into the history of news coverage in Winnipeg about these road surface depressions #mbpoli #wpgpoli 1/
I looked back to the 1900s, and turns out the "pothole" as we know it today didn't really enter the Winnipeg psyche until about the late 1930s. Reference to "potholes" in newspapers prior to WW2 tended to refer to discussions about the draining of "potholes" by farmers /2
Here are my two theories to explain this:
(1) The cult of automobile ownership and car ownership levels were still relatively low compared to today;
(2) I'm going to assume that many roads outside of the urban downtown were not paved with concrete yet (e.g. Charleswood) 3/

The last few years of COVID protests have exposed many more Canadians to the criminal justice system.

Apparently the JCCF is one of those groups as their statement raises issues that are mostly status quo in the early stages of criminal matters.

A few things 👇 #abpoli #mbpoli
1. "This charge is wholly unexpected and inexplicable." Well, no. Any kind of tampering with a judge HEARING YOUR OWN CASE is hugely aggravating and will almost always attract criminal consequences, especially when you admit you did it.
1a. Cooperating with the Law Society is well and good but they are not the police, who have charging discretion. Turns out they decided this was serious enough to lay charges.

Messing with a judge is the epitome of "fuck around, find out" and Mr. Carpay found out.

5 of my employees were sprayed with bear spray while at work yesterday. A first for us but it's way too common - did you know that #winnipeg will experience nearly 1200 incidents this year? Please read this thread on my perspectives and actions taken to reduce this crime /1
First, my team is OK but shaken. Bear spray only causes temporary physical irritation (for hrs) but they were attacked and the psychological aspect can be much more damaging. This person committed an illegal, senseless act and I will pursue it as far as I can /2
Full disclosure: I sell bear spray and have for 20+ years. I sell it as a controlled substance, locked away & in-store only. You must produce valid ID and sign a number of documents before purchasing. I hold a pesticide license and remit all information to the govt each year. /3

Thread incoming on the PC plan to cut higher education:
Faculty, students, and even administrators at Manitoba's universities are united against the Tenneessee model to defund higher education. It's rare to see such unity, but it's clear that all 3 groups are opposed to cuts.
First, let's share this article in today's Winnipeg Free Press outlining: Manitoba explores U.S.-style university funding

First off, MOFA President @lsf58:

“We don’t object to more oversight at all. In fact, we think more financial transparency would be a good thing. Where the argument falls down is (accountability) doesn’t rest upon performance-based funding. That’s a non-sequitur,”

Can we just get one thing straight? Some things are true. They are verifiable and evidentially provable. Saying something different does not alter reality. No matter how loudly, or how many times you say it.

Do you think there is a place in society for telling people things that are not true? For convincing people of things that are, in fact, lies? Should school teachers be able to teach things that aren't true? Should your kid's teacher be able to just make stuff up? 2/25
Suppose your kid's teacher is a member of that Diagolon group. Should they be able teach classrooms of kids that Didula is actually queen of Canada, and Queen Elizabeth and the royal family have been executed on Didula's orders? 3/25

1) omission of SMRs in my mind is unwise as its non-emitting source able to produce winter capacity and especially in remote areas
2) i do think having CCUS removed is wise. until we can actually see a economic example CCUS is still largely speculative

3) having no off-shore wind in the model is a problem. not only for coastal provinces but big resources inland (great lakes, Lake winnipeg etc)
4) not having DR in model is unforgiveable. you simply cant properly model a future energy state without DR. Image

Even before the pandemic hit, the MB PCs have been cutting and privatizing healthcare. Here is a thread about some of those changes. The tl;dr version is in the article below. (1/15)

The devastation of Manitoba: An autopsy of Pallister’s austerity regime canadiandimension.com/articles/view/…
Privatization and cuts go hand in hand with the MB PCs. The architect of many of these cuts was Kelvin Goertzen. After slashing healthcare, he moved on to ed and tried doing the same with Bill 64. He said that he isn’t sure if the state should be paying for such services. (2/15)
In 2019, before covid, 3 out of 6 ERs in Winnipeg were closed (the Vic, Seven Oaks and Concordia). 5 out 6 Quickcare centres were closed. Misericordia Health Care Centre was also closed in 2017. The latter had a huge impact on inner city residents. (3/15) cbc.ca/news/canada/ma…

PC leadership candidate Stefanson accuses rival Glover of threatening to defeat or fire sitting MLAs | #mbpoli cbc.ca/news/canada/ma…
Stefanson's claim about Glover:

"I think if she ends up being our premier, how does she get along with all the caucus colleagues that she's told actually she's going to run someone against them in their nominations, that she's going to fire them?"
Stefanson can't say where or when this was said - or to whom.

"I think it was a statement that was made out there or something, though."

The Conservative Club of MB is hosting a PC leadership forum at the Norwood Hotel.

It's sold out. Everyone here is fully vaxed. At least a dozen PC MLAs in the room. A few police officers. Former mayor Susan Thompson.

Also Coun. Nason, whose party membership has lapsed #mbpoli
I canvassed the crowd, looking for undecided PC members. Didn't find many. Found more observers than undecided.

Most members here already support Shelly Glover or Heather Stefanson.
Susan Thompson, the first woman to be Winnipeg's mayor, notes she celebrated her 1992 mayoral election victory in this very room at the Norwood.

She congratulates Glover and Stefanson. One will be the first woman to serve as Manitoba's premier.
