The Judicial Proceedings Committee is hearing SB 889, a bill that would increase the penalty for carrying a firearm without a permit or outside of any restrictions on a permit from up to 3 years to 5 years imprisonment. MSI opposes. #mdpolitics #mdga23
A conviction under current law is already a lifetime prohibitory of legal firearms ownership. This approach will not increase public safety. A similar bill, SB 745, was withdrawn last week. Read why we oppose in more detail below.

We testified against the House crossfile of SB 889, HB 481 last month alongside a strong, diverse panel of opponents to increasing these penalties.

The MD State Police filed an informational letter critical of SB 1 "Gun Safety Act of 2023". Among their concerns are that pre-Bruen permit holders would be affected, including "judges, state’s attorneys, victims of crime or domestic violence, and legislators" #mdga23 #mdpolitics ImageImage
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources also has concerns about the effect of SB 1 on licensed hunters. Image
The revised version of SB 1 does address some of these concerns, but not all. We have a copy of it at our site here: marylandshallissue.org/jmain/legislat…

The 4th Circuit issued its mandate today in Call v. Jones, formalizing its instructions to the lower court to dismiss the case as moot. The State is issuing permits in compliance with the Supreme Court's opinion in NYSRPA v. Bruen, leaving nothing at issue in Call. #MDpolitics
That prior order was to grant parties' joint motion to remand the case and dismiss as moot.

I’m disappointed that @MDCounties is going to miss a bill hearing, and a pretty big one, this year. Not something that happens often. But weird scheduling quirks compel it. The 2021 session really requires a “waiting week.” I’ll lay out my case. #MDpolitics #MDGA21 …1/x
The bill is #SB496, the Governor’s RELIEF Act, doing multiple things amidst the wake of the COVID crisis. A billion dollars, we hear. Lots for businesses and families. Some will affect county governments, even retroactively. We’re a stakeholder for sure. …2/x
However, the bill got introduced on the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan 20. The bill itself had not been available until then. Then quickly scheduled for its public hearing in the Senate on Tuesday, Jan 26. …3/x

The #BPW on Wed. will consider a proposal to flat fund the county Disparity Grant program. Unlike other state grants and "aid," the disparity grant is designed to promote equity across jurisdictions to overcome disparate tax bases. #MDpolitics (1/8)
The program promotes fiscal equity by providing noncategorical state aid to less affluent counties with proven local income tax effort. It serves to ensure that counties, who rely on LIT for substantial revenue, are able to generate sufficient yield to fund #education, (2/8)
public safety, roadway maintenance, and community services.

#Counties have made difficult tax rate decisions based on the state law governing these grants - to undermine them would be especially untoward even during times of mutual fiscal strain. (3/8)

“Krish holds the distinction of being one of a few candidates who achieved a perfect score on our questionnaire. [She] understands that the growing Asian-American population of Maryland ... is an asset to the state that cannot afford to continue marginalizing.
This is why she is aiming for a more inclusive Maryland, where all of us have a voice at the table, as opposed to a handful of token members.” Thanks to @aademsmoco for the kind words.
Having experienced both #racism and religious #intolerance firsthand on the campaign trial, I intend to fight for Maryland’s #Asian American and #Muslim American communities as #Governor. #mdpolitics #RepresentationMatters

Today is Alana’s 1st #birthday. Unfortunately, with #ElectionDay just a week away, we had to spend several hours today #fundraising to get our second TV ad on the air. Dialing for dollars to beg for money absolutely sucks.
But for #women candidates it's a necessary evil to compete with candidates who are millionaires or funded by special interests. I need your help! I’m the only woman running against 7 guys for #Governor and big outside #PAC money is flooding into the state.
Every $1 you give helps us reach 113 additional #Maryland voters who are looking for change. Please #donate as much as you possibly can and share this message so that #WethePeople can win back the reins of power!!

I'm pleased to announce that the #AnneArundel Circuit Court dismissed the politically motivated #lawsuit attacking my #eligibility today in less than 30 minutes! As I've said many times before—and the judge affirmed—I am absolutely eligible to serve as the #Governor of #Maryland. Image
As confirmed by today’s clear ruling, you can be 100% sure that a #vote for me on the ballot will count and that I will be well positioned to defeat Governor #Hogan in November. #mdpolitics #KrishforMD
As women win elections across the country in the #YearOfWomen, it’s no surprise that a frivolous lawsuit was filed against the first all woman of color ticket. #womeninpolitics

So proud and honored to be running for #Governor of #Maryland with Sharon Y. Blake as my running mate! Even though Sharon’s mother was a nurse at a Prince George's County hospital, Sharon was born in 1950 at Freeman’s - now Howard University - Hospital.
It was the only local hospital that would deliver African-American children. In high school, Sharon was among the cohort of students to #integrate Prince George’s County Public Schools, after which she attended Morgan State University.
She taught for four decades in #Baltimore City Public Schools, and served multiple terms as the President of the Baltimore #Teachers Union. Watch the video, and learn more about Sharon, the phenomenal other half of this campaign! #mdpolitics

Today, #NetNeutrality protections officially expired after months of #Republican inaction on the Hill. The fight is not over. I will remain committed to policies protecting net neutrality if elected #Governor.
These include: (1) Strengthening #transparency requirements (2) Expanding #broadband access (3) Updating #ConsumerProtection rules and (4) Taking action against #antitrust violations
#Internet access and skills are a major concern for many businesses and communities in #Maryland. We need effective #leadership on these topics to keep our state at the cutting edge of modern #technology.
