#RealVoices
Is a series of short films about fishers here in 🇮🇪 and their connection to the sea.
John Brittain, a Galway sea angler tells us how he believes MPAs could lead to better living for coastal communities & a chance to protect biodiversity.
2/
#BlueCarbon
Is the organic carbon captured & stored by the world's oceanic & coastal ecosystems (think seagrasses, macroalgae, mangroves, salt marshes etc.) making the 🌊our biggest ally for mitigating #ClimateChange 💪🌍🌎🌏

🚨Paper Alert🚨

Marine protected areas #MPAs are increasingly promoted as #ocean-based #solution to #ClimateChange, but their contribution to climate change #adaptation and #mitigation remains contentious. Our meta-analysis of 22,403 papers brings clarity. Link below.

🙈Spoiler alert🙉

#FullyProtected #MPAs can can significantly enhance:

©️ carbon sequestration
🌊 coastal protection
🐟 biodiversity
🐡 reproductive capacity of marine organisms
🎣 fishers’ catch
💰 fishers’ income

🧵(2/17)
We identified the potential “climate pathways” through which #MPAs could contribute to #ClimateChange #mitigation and #adaptation. First along mitigation and adaptation dimensions, and then distinguishing among #ecological and #social dimensions of adaptation.

Current #adaptation projects do not automatically enhance #gender equality | need to be intentionally brought in at planning & implementation stages.

Delighted to have brainstormed👇figure with @Joyashree9
Embedding gender considerations and facilitating #women’s participation in project design and implementation along with #inclusive #policies, training, information access, planning, and monitoring is needed
Additional course correction for #SDG5 is needed.
Our #SDG5plus (SDG5+) approach takes into consideration #intersectionality and gender aspects beyond #women alone, & can help #adaptation actions move towards meeting #genderequality and other #climatejustice goals.

True to form as a late lateef, as there are still few mins to go before #WorldOceansDay ends on this earth let me share my pet peeves by replugging old unresolved but doable issues! Bear with me @sherryrehman @hnaqikhan @HqPmsa @IndusEarthTrust @dgprPaknavy @aminattock @dpr_gob
#Pakistan is signatory of #CBD. #Aichi targets mandate declaring 10% of coast as #MarineProtectedArea. Under @mangrovesforfuture a #NationalCoordinatingBody of stakeholders was formed & finally in 2017 #Astola isl. was decl. as the 1st. #MPA

In 2018 a workshop was held by @IUCN to develop a management plan for #Astola. Since then..ZILCH! It is 2022. Status in limbo. Is it to be 'low take' or 'no take'? If former, which level of 'take' or activity is permitted. If latter, what alternatives for beneficiaries @dpr_gob ?

Coming from @cefemontpellier/@umontpellier to take part in the 🌊 #OneOceanSummit 🌊 in #Brest was an incredible opportunity.
Thanks to the organizing team at @UBO_UnivBrest.
Some key takeaways from the summit in a 🧵.
@Inspire4Nature
Scientific experts, industry leaders, conservation organisations, youth, some political figures, and poets all call on 𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 to protect the ocean.
Ocean governance
Multiple calls to get a #BBNJ treaty in 2022.
Need to:
1)overcome fragmented governance in the High Seas
2)Ensure equitable-access to resources.
3)Recognize the @OceanAsCommon

Today, @GlobalFishWatch and @DonaBertarelli launch revolutionary new technology to transform management and research for #MPAs and other important marine areas. 🗺️

Here's a thread on why this matters. 🧵

First, why now?

Our ocean is vital for life on earth. Decisions are made every day about how and where we interact with the ocean - known as spatial management. Failure to get data from those who produce it, to decision-makers who can use it often leads to lost opportunities.
Often, you need to be an expert in GIS software packages to examine the data, or have a lot of money to pay for support. Even then, data is often presented statically in reports. Also, data often can't easily be compared between different sources and between different regions.

(1/4) The #ocean is central to human well-being but an expanding human footprint is placing it at risk. 6% of the #Mediterranean Sea is covered by a #MarineProtectedArea (#MPA) but this percentage is far from telling the whole story...

(2/4) Evaluating the #protection levels of the 1062 Mediterranean #MPAs we show that 95% of this area do not impose #regulations stronger inside than outside #MPAs.

(3/4) Only 0.23% of the #Mediterranean Sea is #fully or #highly protected; levels of protection known to deliver the ecological benefits from which socioeconomic benefits are derived.
