It took me a while, but I believe that picking a bone with this piece by @zeitonline zeit.de/politik/deutsc… makes sense even today. And that’s because it provides a smoking gun proof that the German public opinion is being misled, if not lied to about Nord Stream 2 [THREAD]
Harsh words? Well, listening to Chancellor Merkel during #MSC2019, when she tried to justify the construction of NS2 with the need to avoid letting Russia become more dependent on China (sic!) made me think that German authorities are beginning to look for the most outlandish
arguments to defend a project that has become impossible to defend on pretty much any grounds. Yet, since it had become „too big to fail” (more than 700 km of pipe already sitting on the Baltic seabed, billions of euros invested), Berlin found it necessary to run with it.

Just back from @MunSecConf, where @ColumbiaUEnergy organized a side event on energy’s use as a geopolitical weapon, and I moderated a breakfast discussion on #NordStream2. Here are a few reflections from this year’s #MSC2019 & intersection with energy/climate. (Thread)
At a broad level, the dominant theme was concern among participants about the perception that America was retreating from the global stage and its leadership role in the rules-based international order.
It was notable that the US sent its largest contingent ever of members of Congress from both sides of the aisle, perceived by many as an effort to send a signal that the USG is comprised of more than just the White House.

On my way home from #MSC2019 - and reflecting on the debates, speeches and informal meetings of the past four days in Munich. Let me share my very personal summary - w/ a focus on the transatlantic partnership. Last year, I was quite pessimistic... 1/
So let me start with a bit of good news. In our #MSCreport, we asked who would pick up the pieces of a disintegrating global order. At least rhetorically, the Europeans and representatives of other like-minded liberal democracies have underlined their willingness to step up. 2/
Most attendees agreed that Chancellor #Merkel gave one of the best foreign policy speeches of her career. She really hit a nerve in the audience. Merkel forcefully argued that "all of us" had to pick up the pieces together. 3/

Takeaway from #MSC2019: The weather is far better than the mood.
The mood is dominated by Trump: after denial, anger and negotiations, now the transatlantic community is somewhere between depression and acceptance.
Also noteworthy: the hope that the transatlantic crisis would unite Europe, turning it into a power able to compete on the global stage, has been blown away. Fact that Macron cancelled joint appearance with Merkel is a symbol for the decline of this European dream.

#Thread on Trump, Pompeo and Pence's irresponsible banalization of the words "Genocide" and "Holocaust" at the State of the Union address (#SOTU) , the #WarsawSummit and #MSC2019.
1) Raphael Lemkin, known as the father of the Genocide Convention, rejected the terms "Barbarity", "Mass murder", "Denationalization", "Germanization", "Magyarization" and many others to depict Hitler's attempt to annihilate the Jewish population.
2) He wanted a word that would - according to @AmbPower44 in her book "A Problem from Hell" - "connote a practice so horrid and so irreparable that the very utterance of the word would galvanize all who heard it". To Lemkin words mattered. So he came up with the word "Genocide".

At this year's @MunSecConf #MSC2019 , Angela Merkel just suggested something that didn't get much attention but is remarkable:

During Q&A, she said there could be more to the #FridaysForFuture protests by schoolchildren demanding action on climate change than meets the eye.
“In Germany now, children are protesting for climate protection.... But you can't imagine that all German children, after years, and without any outside influence, suddenly hit on the idea that they have to take part in this process."

Merkel's statement followed her warning that, “Europe has opponents. This hybrid warfare from Russia can be felt every day in every European country.”

Although I suggest you all download our new #MSCreport (-> securityconference.de/en/publication…) and read it - let me walk you through some of its main arguments and illustrations. Some of you might remember Gramsci's famous description of the inter-war "interregnum": 1/n
"The crisis consists," Gramsci wrote, "precisely in the fact that the old is dying and the new cannot be born; in this #interregnum a great variety of morbid symptons appear." Well, that seems like an apt description of today's world. 2/n
The post-Cold war period - and the optimism associated with it - has come to an end. Many of the certainties, widely shared and taken for granted in Europe since the end of the Cold, are eroding. As German Foreign Minister, @HeikoMaas, put it in June: 3/n

Curiously, the #MSC2019 launch event in Berlin is devoted largely to Brexit. @fromTGA explaining why Brexit will be a disaster for the EU. Next up: Barnier's deputy @WeyandSabine, who has been notably outspoken lately.
.@WeyandSabine: when I look at the situation in Britain, I see an extremely polarised country asking difficult questions about globalisation. I'm not seeing a majority in the Commons for a second referendum.
Weyand: cakeism is found on Remain side as well as Leave. The chances for a reversal of Brexit are non-existent. The only option is to enable a structured exit.

On my way home from #MSC2018 - and even more worried than before. When people who don't spend much time with world politics ask whether it is as bad as the media say I now respond: No, it's actually worse.
First, the world has seen a frightening amount of brinkmanship recently. Whether it's East Asia, the Middle East or even Eastern Europe - there is an increased risk of escalation. Many speeches at #MSC2018 have underscored this - in many cases, they added fuel to the fire.
Second, there was a lack of constructive ideas to solve some of the most pressing conflicts: The participants of the Normandy format didn't even meet to discuss. It's hard to imagine a good solution to the INF issue. And it's even worse when it comes to Syria or North Korea.
