Learnt today that #alexanderthegreat of #macedonia #Greece had an #Indian guru the Greeks called "Kalanos" some say this was because he was a devotee of Kali .This #Hindu #Brahmin & Yogi stayed with Alexander till he was 73 & died by voluntarily walking into his own pyre
Ptolemy actually built his pyre & records the death as having taken place in Susa in 323BC .Kalanos distributed all the costly gifts he got from the king to the people and wore just a garland of flowers and chanted Vedic hymns as he walked into the Pyre.
He presented his horse to one of his Greek pupils named Lysimachus. He did not flinch as he burnt to the astonishment of those who watched. Although Alexander was not personally present at time of his immolation, his last words to Alexander were "We shall meet in Babylon".

#EURO2020

#Russia, #US,and the fight over #SputnikV
Short THREAD
#Putin made interesting comments that are important to understand how #Russia reads the situation with promotion of #vaccines
1. #Putin: "Global market for #COVID19 vaccines is worth $100 billion. We see how competitors of our producers behave: they enter a country [that is in need for vaccines],sell a small batch of vaccines on a discounted price but condition the sale with that...
2. "...the country will only purchase that vaccine from that producer in the future. So, there’s a real fight for the markets".

Vienna attacker was born and raised in #Vienna
He also had "Albanian roots" (parents from North Macedonia)

The gunman shot dead in the Vienna attacks was also one of 90 Austrian Islamists who wanted to travel to #Syria

Why is it relevant?

The #Balkans play an important role for #ISIS, which sees them as a buffer and a future battleground. The region already has established networks that can be used to transfer people and to raise support for ISIS.
3
ISIS has popped up in all corners of the globe, not being contained in the territory it physically controls in Iraq and Syria. Its goal is to create a Caliphate, an Islamic state which holds religious authority over the ENTIRE global Islamic community.

Alexander’s Indian Conquest: Why He Returned Without Conquest? #alexanderthegreat #hidispus #indus #macedonia
Alexander the great was one of the greatest emperors the world has seen. He conquered world’s biggest armies, kingdoms and rules. He was also the role model for many great conquerors and emperors that came after him including for Julius Caesar.
In fact, it is said that Julius Caesar wept in front of the statue of the Macedonian emperor, Alexander, and when asked for the reason he said at my age of 32 years, Alexander had conquered the whole world, while I am yet to do anything noteworthy.

Људи,
Here's an interesting tweet that I dug out because I wanted to talk about #France, after talking about #Serbia this night.
Indeed France betrayed Serbs in the 90s, & has been holding onto it since.
I guess it deserves an explanation, from a Frenchman who's not on a payroll.
2. First, as an Historical reminder, what #France betrayed was something big. 200 years of joint History since a wave of Serbian diplomats & scholars came into France to see what we were doing, & then Prince Petar Karađorđević fought in the Franco-Prussian War on the French side.
3. France, despite its ties with the Ottoman Empire, progressively supported Serbia against it because it needed a new foothold in the Balkans, & #Serbia and Serbs showed interest, & huge appreciation for French intellectual & artistic movements. This relationship grew until WW1. Image

As #espionage & #Eurovision coincide, here's #Albania the 1st finalist in this #history thread.
(Also for my #Australia readers seeking relief from #ausvotes as you start your Saturday, it's impressive you convinced them your continent counts 😎)
Next: #Азербайджан #Евровизија
For #Eurovision #Азербайджан and #Spying studies, here's an article from @warisboring about Azeri #aviation being well-placed to use my #Soviet favourite (Foxbat) to work #intelligence against my #USAF (Blackbird).

Next up for #Eurovision finalists with an #espionage twist is #Denmark, whose #Spying #Police (PET) scored a serious scoop in turning Colonel Oleg Gordievsky, the #Russian rezident (lead KGB controller), which later inspired actual #JamesBond plot points:

Around midday on April 1st 1999 Serbian police from Slobodan Milosevic's regime backed up by what looked like irregular militia came to my apartment building in Pristina, #Kosovo and started shooting in the air. They demanded we come out and ordered us to walk behind a car. 2/xx
From listening to the news,I knew something really bad was about to happen 2 me,but I didn’t exactly know what. The option ranged from being beaten, killed, used as a human shield to protect Serb military bases against #NATO bombing to forcefully being removed from my country.3/xx

Today we release our annual @wiiw_news Autumn #Forecast Report, with macroeconomic projections for #CESEE out to 2020. Below, a thread on the highlights 1/13
#Growth still looks quite good for most, notable upgrades this time for #Poland, #Serbia, #Hungary. But downgrades for several #EU members, plus #Turkey, #Macedonia and #Belarus. 2/13
Over the #forecast period we expect best growth performance in #EUCEE and #WesternBalkans, although both will slow by 2020. Outlook for #CIS & #Ukraine weaker. 3/13

A multi-tier model will still have different balances of rights and responsibilities and an asymmetry of power between tiers. A core with France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands will always have the power to dominate the rest and fuel incentives to get in the inner tier
With Eurozone states, almost all of which are involved in PESCO, the EU already has a core tier, with a second tier EU members outside the Euro and a third tier in EEA/Efta/DCFTA relationships with the EU. Multi-speed Europe already exists and the UK is unwilling to join any tier
To drag Macedonia, with its particular dilemmas in relation to Albania, Greece and Bulgaria, into UK debates over multi-speed Europe misses what the core of the problem with this referendum is. Greece has veto power to block Macedonian accession into any European integration tier

The Greeks are ignoring and covering up one of the biggest genocides in Europe in the past 100 years!!!
The chronology begins in 1912 when Greece, for the first time ever, came into possession of Macedonian territory and this by force of arms, almost a decade after the 1903 Ilinden (St. Iliya Day) Uprising lead by the IMRO in a failed effort to free Macedonia from the Ottoman yoke.
The ominous prophecy of Harilaos Trikoupis, Greek Prime Minister from 1882 to 1895, foretold what the neighboring Greek state had in mind for Macedonia and its people:

The EU recognized this hard work by blocking the start of membership negotiations for a state, #Macedonia, that has undertaken more credible reforms in the last yr than @avucic’s #Serbia has during his whole tenure. And yet Belgrade keeps opening chapters... #WBSummitLondon
Here’s what @FedericaMog should acknowledge: by blocking the start of negotiations w Albania & Macedonia while continuing them w the illiberal regime in Serbia the EU confirmed that local elites are better off making themselves a problem rather than a partner. #WBSummitLondon
Brussels has always been afraid of confronting bad-faith actors — see Vucic, Dodik, Gruevski, Covic — allowing instead the tail to wag the dog, and then punishing actual attempts at progress as an inane show of strength. No one fears the EU, in short, not even in the Balkans.

Relations btw opp & govt in #Bosnia's RS entity continue to deteriorate. Following continued obstruction by @SNSDDodik of the investigation into the death of David Dragicevic. Opp claims govt's actions have "dissolved the assembly". vijesti.ba/clanak/412087/…
This matters bc there's a high likelihood Oct elxns in RS, especially, will be roiled by fraud. Both opp & govt are preparing ground for extra-parliamentary confrontations. Dodik has militarized the police, hired Russian paramilitaries, the opp is relying on mass mobilization.
This is also why Dodik has begun to explicitly (and falsely) accuse the British govt of interfering in BiH's elxns. He's has to rig the elxns to win but when/if he's caught he needs an excuse, so he'll blame opp of being "foreign stooges". voanews.com/a/britain-warn…

This is going to get out of hand fast if they actually block Albania and, especially, Macedonia at this juncture. It’ll completely deflate what little reform impulse still exists in the region and reveal Brussels has no Plan B to enlargement.
I’ve long been an advocate of a more forceful EU approach in the Balkans. This isn’t it. Macedonia should be rewarded for what it has done over the last year. And virtually all the arguments for slowing Albania’s roll apply to Serbia & Montenegro too which are being waved thru.
If the concern is with the rampant criminality, not just in Albania but the region, then FRA & NED should push for sanctions against those responsible: political elites. That’s why EU states should have joined US sanctions vs Dodik. This is just pointless collective punishment.
