What: #Buttermilk from Chetta's Buttermilk

Where: Chetta's Buttermilk, Murugesan Complex Road (off Greams Road) Thousand Lights

Why: One would wonder what the deal with a simple dish as the buttermilk was.
We would say it's the taste and the loyal customer base. The buttermilk here is loaded with cut raw mangoes (maanga) and boondi, and the taste is heavenly! According to 'The Hindu', the curd for this buttermilk comes from a dairy farm in Walajabad.
It arrives at 04:00 am and around 50 litres of buttermilk is made at 04:00 pm every day. Their USP? They operate only during the late hours of the night! The crowds, both families and friends, that gather to have Chetta's Buttermilk is an experience by itself!

Long thread: Connections between #Tamil and #Portuguese
When we land in a new country, we generally ask how they say ‘Thank you’ or ‘good morning’ in their language. When we landed in Lisbon, we asked the cab driver: “How do you call a window in Portuguese?” He said, “Janela”.
The emergency windows in Portugal read as ‘Janela de Emergencia’. We continued, “How do you call table in Portuguese?” He said, “Mejai”. We didn’t stop. “How do you call a ‘key’?” “Shavi”, he helped us in the pronunciation. #tamil #Portuguese
Many roof top restaurants in Lisbon are named as “Varanda de Lisboa” (Balcony of Lisbon). Many of us who speak Tamil might have thought Jannal, Mejai, Varanda and Chavi are Tamil words or Sanskrit loan words. They are not. #தமிழ் #tamil_portuguese

Engineering a City #thread
Having spent my entire childhood in #Kochi (#Cochin ), it feels criminal to not know the story of how the city came to be the #metropolis it is today. Putting together a thread to trace the journey of the city which has been so endearingly mine (1)
Part 1: The #Malabar Mud-Banks
The story of Cochin is not just about how an engineering marvel can change social fabric, but also of many tenets of #British #Colonialism in India which is often taken for granted, passed off lazily as exploitation, missing nuance (2)
As with any coastal town, the cultural and economic history of Kochi is intertwined with maritime trade routes since the time of the Early Romans and Arabs. Thanks to the #biennale , most of us would now be familiar with the term #Muzuris (3)

Judges say it is like there is a closed door and they are saying you can open the room. But you want the keys to it too. The question however is whether they are under legal obligation to give you (Govt) the key?
