1/4: UPDATE on #Venezuela

It isn’t accurate to say @jguaido has lost “momentum”.

What is accurate is that most Venezuelans are understandably more focused on day to day survival than on politics right now. Hunger & disease are hard to ignore.
2/4: Meanwhile the #MaduroRegime is desperately searching for foreign currency. They are increasingly struggling to maintain sufficient reserves & pay bills. Expect them to target some of the $4 billion in remittances as a way to move currency into formal channels.
3/4: We are approaching the 3 month mark of Russia deploying personnel to #Venezuela. Expect #Putin to swap out many of the current personnel with new ones soon. Will be interesting to see which nations allow them overflight access to do this.

1/5: The problem with “negotiations” with the #MaduroRegime is that the regime is divided into at least 3 rival camps, two of which have no interest in free elections. nytimes.com/2019/06/11/opi…
2/5: The hardline Cuban puppets like Maduro & Jorge & Delcy Rodriguez want to turn #Venezuela into another #Cuba. They will never agree to any steps towards democracy because it runs counter to the centralized economy & one party government they want to impose.
3/5: The insiders like Padrino,Cabello & El-Aissami care about 💰 not ideology. They want Maduro out because he is weak & incompetent. But they don’t want real democracy either. They want to replace him with an insider who will protect them & the central role of the military.

1/3 #VENEZUELA UPDATE:
#MaduroRegime is focused on maintaining control of #Caracas & abandoning rest of country. Long lines at gas stations everywhere except Caracas. Due to fuel shortage 3 universities in #Tachira suspended class. Will only get worse as 3 key refineries shutdown
2/3 #VENEZUELA UPDATE:
#MaduroRegime sold 13.7 tons of gold for $570 million over past 2 weeks. Nations gold reserves are at a 29 year low with only $7.9 billion on hand. #Maduro is buying military support by allowing high-ranking military officials to directly benefit from this.
3/3 #VENEZUELA UPDATE:
#Maduro claims “I want elections now”. But what he means is an accelerated timetable for National Assembly elections so his control of all media & of the electoral commission will allow him to replace the legitimate one with an illegitimate one.

1/4: #Colombia drug surge that @IvanDuque inherited only 8 months ago is result of his predecessors policies

Narcos are flooding us with drugs & the drug violence they generate in CentAm drives migrants to our border

Won’t be easy to reverse as long as #Maduro is in #Venezuela
2/4: #MaduroRegime isn’t a government. It’s a transnational criminal organization

They allow Narcos to operate with impunity on #Venezuela side of border with #Colombia

They protect their northbound drugs flights

#MaduroCrimeFamiliy is a drug cartel with a seat at the @UN
3/4: #MaduroCrimeFamily help traffickers because:

-It keeps key military leaders “loyal” by providing access to fortune in drug $

-It hurts U.S. by driving CentAmerican migrants to our border & by flooding us with drugs

- & it undermines pro-U.S. @IvanDuque in #Colombia

FIVE PART THREAD ON SITUATION IN #VENEZUELA:
The crisis inside the country has taken a rapid & catastrophic turn over the last 72 hours. As bad as the humanitarian crisis was before, since Thursday it has become increasingly horrific.

We are approaching 72 hours of a nationwide electrical blackout. Already facing growing food shortages, remaining food is spoiling & the prospect starvation is many is now real.
3/5
Already facing severe fuel shortages, generator use has further depleted supplies. In the next few hours more generators will stop at hospitals because fuel is running out. Making matters even worse is that internet & cell service makes communications increasingly difficult.
