On the auspicious occasion of #MahaShivaratri, here's a thread on one of the grandest temples build for Lord Shiva. The Brihadeeshwara temple at Thanjavur.
Built in the early 10th century by the great Raja Raja Chola, the Rajarajeshwaram as it was then called set new architectural standards for Temples to emulate.

We can now say with certainty that its sheer size & grandeur remains unmatched after a 1000 years of its construction.
The Keralantakan Gopuram is one of the 2 Gopurams at the entrance of the Brihadeeshwara temple.

It was built by Raja Raja Chola after be brought a part of the Chera ruled Kerala under his realm.

Wishing all an auspicious #Mahashivratri , may blessings of Mahadeva be with you all. On this occasion taking a look at some famous Shiva Temples in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
What does one say of a language and a region, that takes it’s name from a belief that Shiva descended on three mountains there? The ancient name of the Telugu states is Trilinga Desa, meaning the “Land of the 3 Lingas”. It's believed Telugu gets it's name from this too.
It’s believed that Shiva descended in the form of 3 Lingas located at Kaleswaram in Telangana, Srisailam in Rayalaseema and Draksharamam in Coastal Andhra, which made up the Trilinga Desa. The belief apart both the Telugu states have had a close connect with Shaivism.

With #MahaShivRatri being celebrated in Odisha today,tweeting some facts on Shiva Temples in Odisha, a place where I spent 4 yrs, a Karma Bhumi of sorts to me.Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Odisha , is named after Shiva, one of his names being Tribhuvaneshwara-Lord of the 3 Worlds.
Bhubaneshwar is also called as the Temple City, due to the large number of Temples, and a majority of them are dedicated to Lord Shiva. One of the more popular names for Bhubaneshwar is Ekamra, due to the fact that Shiva meditated under a tree with one mango.
There are at least 30-40 Shiva Temples in Bhubaneshwar still existing, of which Lingaraja, Mukteswar, Parasurameswar are the more known.Of all the temples in Bhubaneshwar the Lingaraja Temple is the most prominent one, with it's 180 ft tall tower
