The Philippines is now free of the highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu virus, said the Department of Agriculture on Tuesday (19 January), citing a statement by the World Animal Health Organization (OIE).
The South-East Asian region, however, is one of the largest importers of meat, esspecialy for chicken, beef and other poultry products, but the report said that it is not dropping the guard against the disease.
A temporary ban on imports of domestic and wild birds and their products from France, South Korea, the Netherlands and Poland has been imposed by the Department of Agriculture, where another newer highly pathogenic strain, H5N8, had been found.

Hundreds of people across the country had to seek refuge on their roofs due to severe flooding from Typhoon "Vamco". The tropical storm wreaked havoc when it pulled over the east of the main island of Luzon, on which the capital Manila is located,
with gusts of wind of more than 250 kilometers per hour. At least one person died and three more are missing, said civil defense. Thousands had been brought to safety before the storm hit. According to the civil defense, around 50,000 people were ordered to leave their homes.

In the morning, typhoon "Goni" hit land on the Philippine island of Catanduanes with wind speeds of up to 225 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 310 kilometers per hour. At least four people were killed in the "super typhoon".
Governor Alfrancis Bichara said on local radio that there was a five-year-old boy among the four dead in Albay province. Two of the people had drowned, one was swept away by a mudslide and the fourth was killed by a falling tree.
Typhoon "Goni" tore off roofs, uprooted trees and triggered storm surges. The storm weakened slightly over the southern tip of the Philippine main island of Luzon.
