The same systems that enable the disease of racism to continue and spread under the guises of “All Lives Matter” and “Law and Order” are the same systems that allowed Dr. Marin Luther King & Emmett Till to be murdered.

Dr. King & Emmett Till are why August 28th is a day for remembrance on Civil Rights.

We have a white supremacist in the WH. His entire presidency & reelection is based on racism.

He’s proof that work on justice & equality is in its infancy & unfinished.

Those who stay silent—silence is deadly.

Ignoring the issues bc it doesn’t affect you allows it.

Those who call for an end to protests bc it makes you uncomfortable in your privilege, but won’t fight for an end to the systemic racism that created it, are enablers.

1/ The following very long thread is a speech by John J. DeBerry, Jr., a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from the 90th district in Memphis. You probably won't hear anything like this today.

2/ Yet this speech is recent; given 8/12/2008 on the floor of the TN House during debate of HB8005; a change to Tennessee law to increase penalties for rioting on state property.

3/ Mr. DeBerry was a Democrat representative for 26 years until the party ousted him in early 2020 for going off the plantation a few too many times. He's running as an independent now.

At the march, MLK gave his “I have a Dream” speech and spoke of the “fierce urgency of now.” Over half a century later and we must still respond to issues of racial injustice with a sense of urgency. Image
Organizers told John Lewis to tone down his rhetoric. He wanted to say..."We will march through the South, through the heart of Dixie, the way Sherman did. We shall pursue our own ‘scorched earth’ policy and burn Jim Crow to the ground — nonviolently." Image
