#Thread on #MLKDay2023 #MLK & The Poor People's Campaign:

The memory of King as an impassioned economic justice-warrior is continually threatened today by the oligarchs who remain in power. They instead take great pains to erase that part of King’s life from his legacy.
They attempt to silence his cries for a more monetarily equitable society. They deliberately obscure the final few years of his life. This sanitized, “white-washed” version of King purges the intense radicalism of the strike-leading preacher.
By his late-30s, King fully realized that social and political justice would always be predicated upon economics. Poverty, he understood, had to be eradicated. His speeches increasingly became threatening to the established American economic hierarchy.

History has taught me to be a better friend & educator. I don’t believe in letting go of the past, as the past has shaped who we are & how we live. While we may believe we have all the choices in the world, we are restricted by systems & attitudes that we dont think about enough. ImageImageImageImage
I have too much to say about the continual & clear existence of anti-Black racism so I’ll just point out that it was phenom learning w/ @eji_org & I’m excited to use this incredible calendar I picked up at @splcenter. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistory365 #BlackHistoryMonth2020
Watching @JustMercyFilm, followed by a sharing of @DesmondCole’s book, “The Skin We’re In”, was such a treat w/ @MmeAsante & Coly who went to #Alabama w/ me to deepen our understanding of our roles as anti-oppressive educators. #theskinwerein #blackliberation #BlackLivesMatter

Jerry Kammer's op-ed in Thursday's @nytimes calling for restriction on immigration as a “liberal” is nothing but camouflaged white nationalism.

How could they fall for it? Well, Kammer is part of the #TantonNetwork and fooling people is what they do.

nytimes.com/2020/01/16/opi…
That they fell for publishing this drivel days before the #WomensMarch and #MartinLutherKingJrDay shows how pervasively the white nationalist movement has infiltrated both our government and our immigration discourse.
The #TantonNetwork can't say they want to enhance inequality. So they camouflage, adopting arguments of economic justice (who will protect American workers?), environmental justice (we must have (certain) population(s) controlled), and the old go-to: appeals to law and order.

Too many epic moments throughout my Alabama trip - so much learning, pain & hope in #Montgomery, #Alabama. I’m humbled to have met ppl fighting the fight & doing all they can to heal from injustices that Black communities have endured. @LegacyMuseum @MemPeaceJustice @splcenter ImageImageImageImage
To walk on the actual paths that #MartinLutherKingJr & #RosaParks had once graced is really something. However, there were many who were not in the spotlight & deserve just as equal recognition for their efforts. #ClaudetteColvin and #MaryLouiseSmith, just to name a few...
The amount of inspiration I’m feeling is indescribable. What a HUGE bonus to be sharing this experience w/ two of the most awesome humans on this earth. Coly & Anita, our bonds are eternal.💗✊🏼 #mayaangelou #courage #themarchcontinues #blacklivesmatter  #justicenow #SocialJustice

As I reflect on the assassination of my father 51 years ago today, this photo means a great deal to me. Even as a child, he captivated me. And
now, as his 56 year-old adult daughter, he continues to captivate me.

I was leaning in then; I am leaning in now. I did not fully grasp who he was then, but now I fully understand. He was a prophet to the world. His words and teachings provide the just, equitable, humane, and peaceful way to create a just, equitable, humane and peaceful world.
What he taught us through his example and through the movement emanated Christ. He was the embodiment of the Christ Spirit. We ignore his words and teachings at our own peril.

Sooner or later all the people of the world will have to discover a way to live together in peace, and thereby transform this pending cosmic elegy into a creative psalm of brotherhood.

If this is to be achieved, man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. The foundation of such a method is love.”

On this day 50 years ago, an unarmed black man was shot to death by a white man.

If it happened today, you would probably scroll past his name on one of your social media platforms, and it would look like this:

#MartinLutherKingJr.

When you look at the 50th anniversary of King's assassination from that perspective, it makes it pretty clear that African-Americans are still dealing with the same exact issues that we faced half a century ago.

#MLK50 nydn.us/2JiOdsk
Throughout this day, you will see people who have no idea what King actually stood for, or would have hated him if he was still alive right now, do what they love to do annually on his national holiday: misrepresent his message.
