Finally got to see @MaryQueenMovie in a cinema, a different experience to the laptop preview, the big screen emphasising the beauty of the whole thing. So I thought I’d update what I said on @ScotlandTonight ... first on its #anglocentric version of Scottish history ...
The credits give a big shout out to John Guy & his book ‘My heart is my own’. Dr Guy is a fantastic English TUDOR historian. #MaryQueenofScots was a Scottish STEWART. It shows...
This #anglocentric perspective, predicated on notions of English cultural/governmental superiority & echoed in ancient English claims to overlordship of Scotland, surfaces immediately as #MQS lands on a wild beach instead of the stone harbour at Leith ...

It’s time for this week’s Tudor/Stuart women’s history lesson and who else can I talk about besides her emoji highness #MaryQueenOfScots <— so cute right??? There’s no end to the bonkers stories about her life, so today we’ll look at her Prison Break(s) From Loch Leven Castle!!
So, after BAMF Mary QofS blew up her dirtbag husband, her scumbag half-brother threw her into an Alcatraz-esque island jail called Loch Leven Castle. She got a room instead of a jail cell and got to wander around the grounds but couldn’t ever leave so it was like a pretty cage

.@thetimes review headlined #MaryQueenofScots as a #MeToo monarch. When she was r*ped by Bothwell, she said it, men around her agreed & Bothwell said he did it. BUT since historians claimed she made it up. So not he said /she said. She said /he agreed - but still not believed! 1
And why was #MaryQueenofScots not believed? Because when Bothwell came to her while she was travelling and said she must accompany him to his castle because rioting ahead, she did. But 1) he had many more men than she did 2) he had protected her before-she believed him 2)
Her contemporaries at the time believed #MaryQueenofScots was assaulted but historians since have said she must have known that Bothwell's intentions were bad and why didn't she scream? They say, why did she believe him that she was safer with him? #MeToo
