#MaskLikeAKid asked the Hard-of-Hearing community how masking has affected both parents & kids.

A deaf mom of deaf children (who wished to remain anonymous) shared her story: "Every gain my hearing aids give me, the masks take away.

I am back to being a dependent person.

I take my hearing child with me on important errands so she can do the listening for me.

I see my other 2 HOH kids struggling in class and with making friends and it breaks my heart.

But they love school and don't want to give it up!

The effect on mental health & self esteem is devastating.

Even having to say 5x/day "I read lips, can you please remove your mask" when about 2 / 5 will simply say "no."

It's like declaring all day long "I'm less than everyone else." But you learn to swallow your pride.

.@AAPPres @AmerAcadPeds You knew this all along & denied it. Now *LISTEN* to the students:

"It's been really important to me to see my teachers' faces and see their face light up when someone gets a question right."

"You’re communicating more than before when you were look looking at someone’s eyes to read their cues."

Melanie courageously talks about her awakening:

"I opened my eyes & realized that what the public schools were putting us through with the lockdowns & online school was *torture.* It has this horrible impact on our mental health... I got out & I got loud."

Melanie continues: "Recently I've been fighting against the mask mandate at my school. I have a legitimate mental health condition that keeps me from wearing it on my face but they seem to have a problem with that so I've been advocating for myself for quite some time now."

Today, like many others, I took the #masklikeakid challenge. Was it the worst experience of my life? No. It was annoying. The mask grew itchy & damp. I had to repeat myself so ppl could understand me. I was delighted to take it off when I was able to. Some thoughts: 1/X
As @appletozuchinni notes, it’s not truly possible to mask like a kid. I have agency. No one is going to yell at me if it slips. I know I can always stop doing this. I also don’t have sensory processing issues, auditory issues, or many other challenges that so many kids do. 2/X
But let’s set that aside for a moment. After today, I stand by my original statement. It’s like a pebble in your shoe. 3/x
