Washington passed 100,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 today.

Every choice you make right now matters.
As we transition into fall, cases are again on the rise in Washington.

Spending time indoors with people outside your household is just too risky right now. We all need to commit to having fewer, shorter, safer interactions – especially as the weather keeps us inside more often.
Each time cases have risen, hospitalizations have followed. We’re beginning to see that same trend now.

The risk COVID-19 presents is very real.

Washington, we’re making progress.

When we mask up, physically distance, and treat this virus like the crisis it is, we see results.

But we need to do more to get this virus under control. Image
COVID-19 levels are still way too high in Washington. As of today, they are over four times higher than our target.

We are making progress, but we have a long way to go before our communities are safe. Image
We know what we need to do.
We see the results when we do it.
We know the stakes if we don’t.

Keep it up.

It is unsafe for most of our students and educators to return to school in person.

We strongly recommend most schools use distance learning.

If they don’t, we risk the spikes other areas have experienced when they reopened schools.

We know we cannot let COVID-19 compound the inequities in our K-12 system.

To help, the state will spend $8.8 million in CARES Act funding to help low income families buy internet plans and address other tech needs. Image
Simply put, it won’t be safe to open schools until we reduce the spread of COVID-19.

We know how to do it. Now, we need to get it done.

✅ Mask up
✅ Physically distance
✅ Avoid interactions

The latest data shows our highest new case weekly avg. ever.

We cannot let this virus get out of control. Today, we’re taking new steps to stop the spread. 1/6
Social gatherings in Phase 3 counties will now be restricted to 10 people a week outside your household.

It’s just too dangerous to be gathering in large groups right now, even in Phase 3 counties. 2/6
People in Phase 2 and Modified Phase 1 counties cannot have social gatherings with more than 5 people a week.

That is already the law. If you’re gathering in larger groups, it has to stop. 3/6

I’m extending the pause on our phased approach to reopening through at least July 28th.

COVID-19 is continuing to spread in Washington. Counties will pause in their current phases until it's responsible to resume reopening. Image
There is some good news. In Yakima, only 35% of people were wearing face coverings at the end of May. That’s risen to 95%.

Cases, infection rates and hospitalizations all seem to be declining in that county. It’s early, but it’s a good sign masks are helping beat this virus. Image
This virus isn’t going away on its own. We have to beat it.

So let’s beat it.

Cases are on the rise across the state. Because of this, I’m pausing counties from advancing to the next phase of our Safe Start Plan for 2 weeks. Image
Wearing a mask shows you care about the people around you.
It shows you want businesses to stay open.
It shows respect.

And it is going to help us beat this virus.

Mask up. Let’s beat this virus.

When in public, it’s always a good idea to wear a facial covering. It’s now required if you are:

➡️ Indoors in public
➡️ Outdoors in public when you can’t maintain good physical distancing Image
If you see someone without a face covering, they may have a medical reason.

Just make sure you’re still keeping at least 6 feet away at all times.
