THREAD: Gerald Reed has been incarcerated for 29 years after being tortured into confessing to a crime he did not commit. His incarceration exposes the illegitimacy of the prison system. W/ the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, now is the time to #FreeGeraldReed and #FreeThemAll
Gerald was kidnapped by CPD on October 3rd, 1990. Detectives Michael Kill and Victor Breska, members of Jon Burge’s notorious “midnight crew”, proceeded to torture Gerald until he confessed to a double homicide.
During the “interrogation” the detectives broke a metal rod that had been placed in Gerald’s leg to repair his thigh bone from a gunshot wound. This injury has still not been adequately treated and Gerald cannot walk because of it.
On Friday we're meeting at 53rd and King Drive, where police murdered RonnieMan Johnson in 2014.
We demand:

Unfortunately @stacydavisgates was unable to attend the forum due to an emergency meeting. We still appreciate her support and the support of @CTULocal1 and we stand in solidarity with them in their fight to get resources and assistance to students during the pandemic.

Gerald Reed is staying strong but remains incarcerated. He continues to ask us for help in demanding better sanitary conditions in the prisons. People are still not wearing masks in Stateville NRC and in many correctional facilities across the country #FreeGeraldReed #FreeThemAll

The Chicago Police Department has a long history of torturing false confessions out of people. There are hundreds of incarcerated survivors that we know about and many more whose stories have not yet been recognized. Our mission is to #FreeThemAll.
Survivors, families, and community orgs have fought for years to make Chicago recognize this systematic torture, but the city continues to deny justice to survivors by keeping them in prison and defunding the TIRC. Our demand to @GovPritzker: immediately release all survivors!

Gerald Reed is still in NRC at Stateville. His health has improved but we are still pushing for prisons to test everyone inside & not just those who are seriously ill.

@GovPritzker is moving very slowly on depopulating prisons and jails. We suspect this is partly due to pressure from right wingers who obviously don't want anyone to be let out of prison, so we need to build more pressure to counterbalance them. Keep calling!

Some of Gerald's symptoms have subsided but someone he knows, "Spanky" Wells, recently passed away due to covid-19 inside Stateville. Every person in there and in every prison, jail, and detention center is at risk of losing their life and we must fight to #FreeThemAll.
For that reason we are keeping the pressure up on @GovPritzker. Tomorrow's action of the day is to call the governor and demand that he #FreeGeraldReed and enact a #MassReleaseNow.

And they’ve been conditioned to think there is a certain kind of person (usually Black or Brown) who is inherently violent and must be removed from society to protect people. Believing racist myths keeps them from looking at the root cause of violence & other social problems.

We started the Campaign to Free Incarcerated Survivors of police Torture (CFIST) around a year ago. During that time the campaign has mainly focused on securing pardons for the tortured and wrongfully convicted. With the threat of covid-19, the goal is #MassReleaseNow
CFIST has been building power and demanding that the governor pardon Gerald Reed and other torture survivors for over a year before the COVID-19 crisis with no action from the governor. Now we demand #MassReleaseNow and the governor is still not doing enough.
Our vision is to completely dismantle the prison industrial complex. The Alliance has always highlighted the human rights violations inflicted by prisons and police. These violations by CPD and the IDOC have been brought to the UN Commission on Human Rights.

Headlines will say "Jack Dorsey donates $1 billion" and I want everyone to know that's not what he's doing. He's putting $1 billion into a company that's gonna be a part of the privatization of services the government should provide. It's gonna be like the Gates foundation.
So a tiny amount of that fund will get donated, but the bulk of it is gonna turn a profit for jack, and the billionaire defenders will praise him as he gets richer while most people get poorer.
