Turkey announced that it had extended the seismic survey work of its ship Oruc Reis in the disputed area of the eastern Mediterranean until 4 November, taking a step towards increasing the region's tensions.
NATO members Turkey and Greece are locked in a dispute over the size of their continental shelves and competing claims in the eastern Mediterranean for hydrocarbon resources. When Turkey sent Oruc Reis into waters also claimed by Greece and Cyprus, the row erupted in August.
Together with two other ships, Ataman and Cengiz Han, Oruc Reis will continue to operate until Nov. 4 in the region south of the Greek island of Rhodes, a Turkish naval maritime notice said late on Saturday. A prior notice scheduled survey work until Oct. 27 in the region.

Austria's Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has accused Turkey of provocations in the gas dispute in the eastern Mediterranean and threatened European sanctions.
"I am glad that those who traditionally show a great deal of understanding towards Turkey were also prepared to clearly recognize that one provocation follows the next in Turkey," said Kurz after the EU summit in Brussels.
It was once again made clear that a response would have to be made with sanctions if Turkey did not stop these provocations.

There may be a new sign of easing in the conflict over the gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean: Turkey withdrew its drilling ship "Yavuz" off the coast of Cyprus.
As can be seen on ship tracking pages on the Internet, including the "Vessel Finder" page, the "Yavuz" docked in the Turkish port of Tasucu in the Mersin province. There was no official explanation of the movement of the ship.
The return of the drill ship to Turkey coincides with the visit of NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg to Turkey. He then travels to Greece.

At that time, according to the UNHCR, 368 refugees and migrants died. According to the latest figures published on Friday by the Italian Ministry of the Interior, almost 24,000 migrants and refugees reached an Italian port this year.
That is three times more than in the same period last year - at that time it was 7,900 - and 13 percent more than in 2018.

Thousands of Algerians try to cross to Europe, even though they face high fines. Within a week, the Algerian authorities picked up more than 750 migrants and recovered three bodies from the Mediterranean.
As the Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday, several boats with 755 migrants were picked up off the Algerian coast from Sunday to Friday. On Monday the ministry had already announced that ten people had drowned and 485 migrants had been arrested in the previous days.
The majority of migrants who travel to Europe from Algeria are Algerian citizens. Despite a law from 2009 that provides for sentences of up to six months in prison for illegal emigrants, thousands of mostly young Algerians are making the dangerous journey.

On the rescue ship "Open Arms" with around 280 migrants, the situation is becoming increasingly desperate. Dozens of people jump overboard to reach Sicily by swimming.
So far, the crew has been waiting in vain for a permit to enter a European port. The situation on board the ship, which was completely overcrowded with around 280 rescued, was critical, said the Spanish aid organization Open Arms on Twitter.

The crew had rescued the people in distress from the Mediterranean last week, but so far asked in vain for permission to enter a European port.
