Wanting to apply to study medicine in the UK but not yet submitted an application? Or is your application already in? Well, the process is somewhat complicated and this šŸ§µ with 10 top tips is for you, from someone who has been an admissions tutor for 8 years!

First of all, if you haven't submitted your application yet, please be aware the clock is ticking! The UCAS application deadline is 15th October for Medicine, and late applications are rarely considered.

Tip #1: Don't miss the deadline!!

2/17
Of course, to apply, you have to have an idea of which schools to apply to! Two things should influence your choice:
a) Places you can meet the entrance criteria for,
b) Places you actually want to go to.

Lets consider each of those...

There are a lot of jargon words in #neurology. As a student, I felt particularly confused by the words clonus, myoclonus, and asterixis, so I made this #tweetorial for learners who feel like I did.
#MedTwitter #MedEd #medicalschool #neurotwitter
Clonus is RHYTHMIC involuntary muscle contractions. It's caused by lesions to the pyramidal tract (ie UMN). It's likely due to exquisitely hyperreflexic muscle stretch reflexes - basically the muscle contraction triggers itself to keep firing in a feedback loop. Image
An easy way to check for clonus is by rapidly plantarflexing the foot, but you can sometimes see clonus just by checking muscle stretch reflexes.

Sustained clonus is defined as > 10 consecutive beats, but both sustained and unsustained clonus are generally pathologic in adults.

1/ Many folks have messaged me asking for guidance regarding #USMLE, so I figured I might create a thread on how I was able to take all exams (except step3) while still in #medicalschool.
The following šŸ§µ is what I found useful for me, obviously doesn't apply to everyone.

2/ Disclaimer, I was an average #medicalstudent, no genius or prodigy.
I put in the extra effort and it paid dividends.
I graduated in Nov 2012, as an #IMG and matched into surgery in Mar 2013. If I can do it, so can you, just remember no shortcuts in life.
3/ The first time I heard of #USMLE was in Dec 2010, when my buddy was studying for it.
It was around that time I looked into studying for this "international exam" as I would falsely assume.
Once I did some digging, I realized, everyone has to take it to practice in the US.

Beyond thrilled to have been awarded a *renewal* for my @NIH_LRP award!!!!!! Story time (on #privilege and #perseverance)

As a first-generation #Kenyan American, raised in #Kenya and very much an #African child (if you know you know), a #doctor is very much what I was going to be from the time I was born. šŸ˜‹ (thankfully, also a marrying of my love of science and taking care of people!) 2/
So it was to my parentsā€™ incredible delight when I got accepted to #medicalschool, never having... basically... known someone who had done so, in the US anyway. #firstgen #firstgeneration (yes, this story has a comical peak, wait for it...) 3/

In 2001, I #failed 4 core science classes in #medicalschool. I didnā€™t go to class, I stayed up late at night reading the topics in every book I could possibly find. I barely passed my other courses. I couldnā€™t believe NEone passed..

I had to go before the review and promotions committee and beg for a chance to try again. I donā€™t for the life of me see why they gave me the chance...

I can say, I tried hard, I just wasnā€™t smart about it.

In the summer before restarting m1, I came up with a plan..

I approached each of the top 10% in the class I was now leaving. I asked them how they did it, down to the details on brands of pens, where they sat in class, what they ate, and when they went to bed.

Guess what...they were pretty uniform in their methods.

10 things IMG (and USMG) applicants should know for the 2020 residency MATCH: I canā€™t help but recall how stressful the application journey was one year ago. I hope this thread helps out (instead of adding stress)! @ERAS @AAMC
Build your CV: it helps as you are requesting letters from mentors, or basically any email you're sending. Have a clear CV that speaks of your accomplishments. Do not miss a certificate or work in progress. Here is a link to how to do a cover letter.
Before programs see your application & statement letter, look at it yourself. Know your goals, or at least outlines of your goals. Know your weaknesses and SHOW that you are working on them. Practice your ONE LINER. This will improve your statement letter and application.

1/ Itā€™s been a week.

Itā€™s well into Friday evening & I just got off the phone with a patient who had urgent radiology results. This was after spending > 40 min on the phone w another patient discussing the same this afternoon.

(18 more to come; stick with me.)
2/ I only got 2 items on todayā€™s long ā€œto doā€ list done ā€” but thatā€™s on me. I was finally able to sit down for a couple hours uninterrupted and dig deep into a few patient cases from the week.

(And I ā€œdonā€™t workā€ on Fridays.)
3/ As I hung up the phone, I reflected on how #directprimarycare has enabled me to get to the heart of medicine & the doctor-patient relationship.

During that call, my patientā€™s spouse broke down and ā€” through sobs ā€” simply said: ā€œThanks for being so kind.ā€
