Boy oh boy are there a lot of cops out on the roads leading in to Melbourne CBD this morning. Saw two big roadblocks on a short bike around the outskirts this morning #Melbourne #melbourneprotest. Livestreams from #sydneylockdown #sydneyprotest also showing heavy police presence.
Some protesters have suggested using Waze to mark police presence for each other.
The plan in Melbourne seems to be to walk in from nearby places like Richmond or South Yarra.

Systemic issues are contributing to the continuing #Melbournelockdown, not solely ‘rule breakers.’ One systemic issue is the social response. To combat this, we need to better acknowledge human behaviour and motivation to tailor appropriate social measures. 1/10
Compliance to any rule can only be obtained when there is value at an individual level. The risk vs reward balance is changing for many individuals, and the Vic response needs to acknowledge and support this, not punitively target it. 2/10
Compliance with current restrictions is impeded by reduced fear in transmission, and increased hopelessness. Continued moving goal posts to end a lockdown at a level that appears unachievable naturally impedes compliance. 3/10

One of the admin jobs Cassandra Francisco applied for this month had 796 applicants. The average has been 416.

Only 12 days after Melbourne hopes to leave stage 4, the feds will cut welfare benefits by $300 a fortnight.

In general, the areas struggling most have also been hardest hit by the virus.

We estimate about 420,000 Melburnians now under stage 4 lockdown will be hit by the $300 cut to coronavirus supplement
Meanwhile, Victoria-wide Treasury analysis released today finds that since 26 June the number of unemployment benefit recipients rose by about 27,600, or 7.2%. theguardian.com/australia-news…

❗️The BEST summary of #COVID__19 I’ve read so far.

#COVID19 is a potentially preventable disease. The relationship between the intensity of public health action and the control of transmission is clear.”

This includes helpful overviews of the pathophysiology, transmission, diagnosis, and treatment of #SARSCoV2 — including a summary of progress and barriers to a vaccine.

#COVID19Vic jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/… @normanswan
“Until an effective vaccine is available, the primary methods to reduce spread are face masks, social distancing, and contact tracing.”

Do your part, Vic. 💪

Umm... why are medical students expected to attend rotations on Monday in hospitals as Victoria faces its largest ever wave of community transmission, which has already lead to quarantine of estimated 500+ health workers? #covidvic #covid19 #auspol #melbournelockdown
It’s about student’s health, and also limiting transmission from hospitals back to community, something I had hoped we had learned from Italy, UK etc but nah let’s wing it hey it is what it is
This thought was originally shared with me by..... a medical student

LISTEN. TO. HER. Awatif Taha is living in the flemington towers. Very nuanced piece. Absolute must read. #covid19aus #auspol #melbournelockdown #covid19vic theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
'We have been really careful but we are living so close together, and sharing so much, so we know it is risky'

'The government has not done enough, given this situation.'

'People need medication, bread, milk, things for babies. We don’t know yet how that will be done'
Awatif states exactly what's lacking. But recognises the rapidly evolving nature of the crisis: Image

The social and economic determinants of health, writ large.
#SDoH #COVID19Vic #melbournelockdown
The people living in these towers are (typically) not the ones coming back from overseas, or those who have sick leave, annual leave etc. There are higher rates of substance addition, mental health needs, other health conditions and primary languages that aren't English.
Please #auspol address all these issues to mitigate death (a legit concern from substance withdrawal) stress, health problems, & increased rates of domestic violence. We need a health response to this lockdown to support our people living in these towers who cannot leave.
