Today is #MentalHealthAwarenessDay, this year they are focusing on suicide prevention.

I am a lucky survivor to go wouldn’t be here if I hadn’t had an amazing medical team and a superb support system.

I am proud of my recovery and I am never ashamed of speaking of it.

I was 19 years old when I had my first suicide attempt. Out of the blue, no one could have ever predicted this young smiley girl with a picture-perfect life was struggling to stay alive.

I had a perfect life, an amazing family, wonderful friends, A+ grades...
I just didn’t want to live, or better yet, I really wanted to live, but I couldn’t cope with the pain and desperation I felt inside. I truly believed everyone’s lives would be better if I disappeared and I could finally rest and sleep peacefully.

On October 2nd, a very close friend of mine passed away due to a heart attack. He was 33, has a 3 year old. If you ever spoke to him, you'd never know how much stress he was under. He'd always say "I can't show my weakness, my stress in front of my child & my wife".
That fateful morning, he woke up with a chest and back pain. As he lived in a small town, the local doctor advised him to be transferred to a bigger hospital which was 12 kms away. He didn't make it. He died in his father's arms. He never expressed his stress except for
When he discussed it with us. He just couldn't handle it. He used to say, "A lot of people have it worse than I do", only because that's what was told to him to make himself feel better. Do you know the worst part? I spoke to his father and he said -

THREAD.

after my 2nd suicide attempt, following over a decade of struggling with my mental health, all of my friends cut me off and i had to move out of my home, and NHS mental health services kept turning me away.

i realised i was going to have to get better on my own.

i had lost everything & been betrayed by the people i loved; i not only had to fight my way back from suicide without their support, i had to restart my life from scratch.

it was the most painful thing i have ever done. for a year, i just sat in my room at my parents' house.

i realised i had a choice, and this is the part i want to communicate.

i didn't immediately make new friends, and the NHS mental health services still didn't want to know (A&E were even worse). even though i reached out and was refused help and wanted to give up, i didn't.

I’m sick of the way we talk about mental health. I’m sick of the idea that all we need is ‘awareness’. I’m sick of hearing that help is out there. It isn’t. Help is 6 months away when you need it today. Help isn’t telling a friend and then Oh Wowe I Feel Lighter. We’re in crisis.
Poor mental health is a pandemic, and we do not have the resources to tackle it. If mental health was cancer it would be all over the news. It wouldn’t be just this one kumbayah day of hand holding and cutesy Ed Sheeran videos.
It makes me sick. When I needed help, I had to fucking pay for it. There was no ‘help’. I wouldn’t be told to ‘reach out to my parents’ if I had leukaemia. I’d walk into a hospital and the process would begin. A long road to recovery, but a medical one. Not a hope and a prayer.

Today was #MentalHealthAwarenessDay. It only seems a month ago that we had #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth. I've got some thoughts I want to share, so here's a thread. Before I start, CW: Mental health, depression, anxiety etc. /1
I, in no way, wish to denigrate the important work done by charities when it comes to raising awareness about mental health problems. Despite a decade of campaigning to the contrary, there is still a culture of silence around mental health that we need to defeat /2
Defeating that culture, however, is made exponentially more difficult by the fact that mental health services in the UK have been completely gutted over the last 10 years. Not only has money been directed away from provisions for the most vulnerable, lack of investment... /3
