This Q is the crux of the argument for me.

Any "red flags" should have nothing to do with firearms and everything to do with mental healthcare.

Both are slippery slopes but one focuses on cause (illness) and the other on symptom (harm).

Those identified as a threat to society with sufficient evidence should be indefinitely committed under supervision of a comprehensive care team to be fully evaluated, educated, and declared safe. Otherwise, should not be able to fully participate in society.
Safeguards should be in place to protect our liberties.

There must be adequate oversight to ensure the public that the atrocities associated with asylums/institutions will never be allowed.

Patient advocates and legal representation should be available at all times.
