O regulamento para a temporada de 2014 promoveria diversas mudanças, sendo a maior delas o retorno dos motores turbo, que estavam proibidos desde 1988. As regras fixavam motores com angulação de 90 graus, com virabrequim e pontos de montagem fixos no chassi.
Os motores teriam de durar cerca de 4000 quilômetros antes de serem substituídos, ao contrário dos motores de oito cilindros aspirados utilizados até 2013, que deveriam durar até metade dessa quilometragem. Além disso, o "motor" passaria a se chamar Unidades de potência.

The long wheelbase, and indeed the whole concept of the W11/W12 has been replaced as a result of the new rules this year, so don’t expect much carry over. Compared to last year the team has stated that only the steering wheel remains the same.
