@cosima_meyer Before working in the industry, I explored my passion for research in academia. I hold a PhD from the University of Mannheim in #politicalscience (my dissertation dealt with post-civil war stability 🕊).
@cosima_meyer While working at @MZESUniMannheim, I co-founded a #datascience blog “Methods Bites” (@mzes_ssdl) which provides several hands-on tutorials on #NLP, scraping #Twitter data, #dataviz, or how to publish your package on #CRAN.

I was going to save this for tomorrow but I just can't.

A thread.

#Reporting #Searching #SystematicReview

Someone asked me recently if I could share any examples of #SysRev that had GOOD methods sections.

🧵🧵🧵
I said, "They're few and far between but usually Cochrane #SysRevs have a well-reported methods section."

However, when I went to look, I couldn't find any great examples. They were all kinda iffy. I was like
Then, this article practically fell in my lap this weekend. It was tweeted from a #COVID19 literature account.

Take a look at that methods section. It's almost glowing. It may as well have a halo around it.

Finally, the #GoldacreReview is published! (During Parliamentary Easter holidays, mid-ping-pong on the #HealthAndCareBill...)

It's 221 pages - each PDF page is a double page spread - so this could be a lo-o-o-ong [Thread].

Here goes...
First point to note, in the Terms of Reference (p5), is that this is about "access to #NHSdata by #researchers, #commissioners, and #innovators" - i.e. #Planning and #CommercialReUse - so it is directly relevant to the operation of millions of people's #NationalDataOptOuts... 🚨🚨 New working paper 🚨🚨

I examine what @PeoplesMomentum actually did for the @UKLabour during the 2017 Election #Facebook campaign - I develop further the concept of 'satellite campaigning' and originate the idea of 'Janus-faced campaigns' #arxiv 1/

I find the #2017GE fascinating because it disrupts the targeted ads are everything narrative. Something was in the water and it was visible via Facebook. Since Facebook's audience has changed, but I still feel the case highlights the vitality of organic campaigns/satellites 2/ Image

I read the @biorxivpreprint every day. I've recently been asked by various people what/why/how I read so here is a short thread that may be helpful to others: 1/
@biorxivpreprint I read abstracts of articles on the @biorxivpreprint every morning and every evening, and typically a few times during the day as well. I am sometimes delving into the main paper, usually starting with the supplement. 2/
@biorxivpreprint I search for articles on @Google using keywords (and filtering for "past 24 hours"), my lab has @SlackHQ channels where people post articles, I check @rxivist, and I read and search twitter by keywords for topics I'm interested in every day. I follow @biorxivpreprint. 3/

Streatham #terrorist was arrested in glorifying, promoting and possessing #terrorism material but at the time of having these, he has no capability to commit an act of terrorism.
After releasing from prison, he had #Motivation and #Capability to do so.
He got both from #prison.
So in this case, the question arises, how and from where did he get capability and motivation to commit an act of terrorism in prison?
There are really serious issues in prison #rehabilitation programs. These programs need to be reformed & added right #methods by @ukhomeoffice.
It’s time for @MoJGovUK to reevaluate the prevent strategy in prisons. They need to recruit more efficient Islamic theologians and introduce new counter Islamist ideological methods in order to rehabilitate potential terrorists.
@ITCTofficial is ready to offer such services.

[Day4: Strengths & Limits of #SciComm forms, media, & spaces]
It's theory vs practice day!

There are loads of resources out there for #BestPractices. Today, let's discuss the strengths & limitations YOU've found in trying #STEM #storytelling, #comedy, #SciArt, #digital, & more!
I'll start w/ my favorite resources: @edbeltane & @OliverEscobar's "Public Dialogue & Delibration" & #WendyFaulkner's "Dialogue in #PublicEngagement" handbooks.

How do participant #communication styles impede/help your purpose, eg. #dialogue vs #debate?
beltanenetwork.org/DialogueTheory…
These have been crucial in my understanding of #experiencedesign when creating events or experiences for diverse #scicomm audiences & participants.

There's a purpose for panels and debates. But also a reason why they fail in "changing minds" or creating power-balanced convos.

Like most IT people I love tools. And tools are absolutely vital to #Agile, esp. #automation of #development & #delivery. But when it comes to managing teams & processes, do #tools and #Agile always mix? Maybe not…
1. Software developers like #tools. No, they adore tools. They seem the most natural way to solve a problem, and they are familiar territory that any #delivery team is more than happy to enter. #Agile
2. But #tools provide little support for the *content* of most #Agile delivery tasks, from defining Product Vision to conducting Daily Stand-Up Meetings. They do support day-to-day workflow, reporting and recording, but at that level are often easily replaced by manual #methods.
