These past few weeks we saw many xenophobic remarks towards migrants in Malaysia, more so after the Al-Jazeera documentary on their mistreatment during the lockdown was released; but why do many still deny this? This thread explains the issue and the #MigranJugaManusia movement 1/ Image
Throughout the MCO, areas that were heavily populated by refugees and undocumented migrants were raided by police and immigration. The raids saw hundreds of people including children carted off, without masks provided or enforcing social distancing. 2/ Image
The UN has even alerted Malaysian authorities on how the raids are counter productive.

We can breathe a sigh of relief. The 27 Rohingya men who were initially sentenced to be caned had their sentences set aside and will not be subject to a cruel and inhumane punishment.

Refugees should not have to flee persecution just to face more of it.

However, many more refugees continue to be detained in immigration detention centres, and even in jail for violating 'immigration offences'. They should never have been detained in the first place, and we urge the Malaysian government to release them.
Refugees are not criminals. Seeking a better life for themselves and their families is not a crime. Undocumented migrants should not be criminalised as well. These people need our help, now more than ever.

"The government had never planned on sending the Rohingya illegal immigrants back out to the open sea"

We can breathe a sigh of relief that Rohingya refugees are not in immediate danger of being sent back out to life-threatening open waters.

But the fight is far from over, as refugees and other undocumented migrants are still being held in immigration detention centres, and still at risk of contracting COVID-19. We will continue urging the Malaysian government to ensure the health and safety of those detained —
– and calling for their eventual release. Rohingya refugees flee their country because of the threat of genocide and persecution. Against all odds they made it to Malaysian soil. They deserve to be treated with basic humanity and respect.

Why is Malaysia sending 269 Rohingya people, including 49 children, back to the sea and potentially to their deaths? This is not a game of ping-pong. This is a matter of life and death. #MigranJugaManusia #DontPushBoatsBack @IsmailSabri60 @MINDEFMalaysia @imigresenmy @KP_JIM
When the boat arrived, media reported that 1 dead body was found and many were too weak to even walk. Sending boats back out to sea means sending people to death, abuse, and starvation. #MigranJugaManusia #DontPushBoatsBack @IsmailSabri60 @MINDEFMalaysia @imigresenmy @KP_JIM

In 2010 we published this report about the abuse of detained migrants. This is some of what we learned.

What is the future for detained migrants? Shoved into cellblocks with close to 300 other detainees where daily drinking water becomes a daily trial, physical and sexual abuse becomes a reality, overcrowding and poor hygiene creates a breeding ground for illness and disease.
