#TyreNichols #Memphis When I was Commissioner (oh so long ago), I pushed several resolutions for police reform. All attempts were blocked due to proximity to Mayor Strickland and Sheriff Bonner.
- I asked for a directory of officers charged with misconduct. Denied.
- I asked for a directory of officers charged with misconduct. Denied.
- I asked for POST certification removal for fired officers. Denied. (Retaining POST allows officers to go to a different police department when fired. It’s why #DarrenWilson who murdered #MikeBrown is still a police officer.)
- I asked for community housing program where young recruits were required and incentivized to live in the neighborhoods they worked. Denied. (This program has shown to improve community - police relations and results in less use of force as well as lower arrest and crime rates.)
My fam had a beautiful spring break wkd in LA. Full bellies, sun tans, and lots of bball. It was joyous seeing Black boys live fully. I was ready to ride this high - but it ended so abruptly after hearing that another BM was killed by the police.

Losing one life to the police is more than enough, because #DanteWright mattered to many. It sets off a ripple effect in his community. & it becomes overbearing because we know that it is never just one. It is a pervasive systematic horror that ravages communities far and near.
Losing Black live to the police represents #StolenBreaths of those who are killed as @RRHDr , Medina, and @RheaBoydMD told us. But it also represents #StolenLivelihoods from those who are left behind

In 2014 while protests continued in Ferguson after #MikeBrown, an unarmed teenager was killed by police ofcr Darren Wilson, then Attorney General Eric Holder visited Ferguson, meeting with community groups and local law enforcement to signal the dept’s engagement.
Similarly, in 2015 Attorney General Loretta Lynch visited #Baltimore to meet with the family of #FreddieGray, community groups, civic leaders and local law enforcement.

Sometime in the early or mid-1990's, after I had recently moved to the St. Louis area from California, I volunteered to make a run to the food bank for my church.
This was my first trip to North County (traveling north of the Del Mar divide). I lived in a working class neighborhood in South County - and had learned enough from my neighbors to know "you don't go to North County or East St. Louis"
After #MikeBrown was murdered, an investigation revealed "shocking emails" including racist exchanges between higher-ups in the #Ferguson police department. I doubt many Black Ferguson residents found the exchanges shocking. #AbolishICE #AbolishPolice politico.com/story/2019/07/…
Be it ICE, police, or the military, dehumanization comes with the territory. It is the only way officers can justify the assault, displacement, murder, and psychological damage they are charged with inflicting, and still sleep at night. #AbolishICE #AbolishPolice
We need to stop seeing misogyny, racism, and bigotry amongst law enforcement agents as "shocking" and start understanding it as a necessary product of the law enforcement project--one that is knowingly encouraged by the system's gatekeepers #AbolishICE #AbolishPolice
I haven't written about #MikeBrown today because i don't know what to say. I wish I were home in StL so I could go to the vigil. I wish his murderer was charged & convicted. I wish Mike was alive. I wish that in his death, the whole country would unite around #BlackLivesMatter.
I'm getting gas in a little town called Washington in western Pennsylvania, on my way from DC back home. 35% voted blue in 2016 here, I just checked.

It's with a heavy heart that we closed the doors to @WellspringSTL. I wanted to share some of my experiences at this beautiful church. (thread incoming)
I first attended the Well on the 1st anniversary of #MikeBrown's death, August 2015. Upon arrival, a later familiar face greeted me with a hearty "Good morning and welcome to Wellspring!" I then received a hug from another friend-to-be and was shown to my seat with a coffee.
The service was both memorial and call to action; something must be done to stop these police killings. I had participated in the Boston marches last year, but @FWillisJohnson delivered a sermon that truly stirred my spirit. What soon transpired was a life-changing journey.
