🧵Sensible Transfers: #Millwall

The latest instalment is Championship side Millwall

Here are 5 players they could look at

Remember to comment what team I should do next plus 5 positions! 👇 Image
GK: Ethan Horvath

Promotion winner Horvath is likely to be available again, as Forest are stacked in the keeper department. I also feel Luton will look at an experienced PL stopper

This means the big American could be available, either on loan or on the cheap Image
LB: Sam McCallum

Left back was extremely difficult, however one player I do feel has a lot of upside is 22 year old McCallum

He’s had 3 campaigns at Championship level now. He’s entering the final year of his contract, so may be available on a cheap deal Image

#Millwall 2020/21 financial results covered “a strong season, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic”, when they finished 11th in  the Championship and reached the fourth round of the FA Cup and third round of the Carabao Cup. Some thoughts in the following thread.
#Millwall pre-tax loss widened from £10.9m to £13.8m, largely due to revenue falling £3.9m (24%) from £16.4m to £12.5m, though operating expenses were up £0.7m (3%). Partly offset by profit on player sales increasing £0.6m to £0.7m and other income rising £1.2m to £2.1m.
#Millwall £4.0m revenue decrease was largely driven by match day falling £3.0m (67%) from £4.4m to £1.4m, as COVID meant games being played behind closed doors, while broadcasting also decreased £1.0m (11%) from £9.4m to £8.4m. Commercial income held steady at £2.7m.

This afternoon's #SpyCopsInquiry hearing will start just after 2pm.
If you'd like to see a moving transcript of what is said (10 mins after it's said) you can watch this on

@tombfowler David Barr (Counsel to the #SpycopsInquiry ) took us back to the Star & Garter hotel car-park.

HN298 – using the cover name 'Michael Scott' – was arrested at this demo, blocking the British Lions rugby team bus (they were about to head off on a tour of apartheid South Africa).
@tombfowler HN298 claims to have been in the road at the time of his arrest. He has no recollection of his actions on the day, but says he “would have been going through the motions” (of participating in the direct action).

#Millwall 2019/20 financial results covered a season when they improved their position in the Championship from 21st to 8th. Manager Neil Harris left in October 2019, replaced by Gary Rowett. COVID-19 had a substantial impact on the club’s operations. Some thoughts follow.
#Millwall pre-tax loss widened from £0.7m to £10.9m, largely due to profit on player sales dropping £5.3m to £0.1m, though COVID and a run to FA Cup quarter-final prior year meant revenue fell £2.0m (11%) from £18.4m to £16.4m, while expenses rose £2.3m (9%).
#Millwall revenue decrease was largely driven by match day falling £1.3m (23%) to £4.4m,  as 5 games were played behind closed doors, while broadcasting decreased £0.7m (7%) to £9.4m. Commercial income held steady at £2.7m.

#Millwall’s 2018/19 financial results covered a season when they just avoided relegation from the Championship by finishing 21st, but did reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. Manager Neil Harris left in October 2019, replaced by Gary Rowett. Some thoughts in the following thread.
#Millwall achieved “the best result for many years” by reducing their loss from £5.0m to just £0.7m, as revenue increased by £2.8m (18%) to £18.4m and profit on player sales and loans rose by £6.9m, partially offset by £5.6m growth in expenses.
#Millwall revenue increase was largely driven by broadcasting income, up £2.4m (32%) to £10.0m, partly reflecting televised cup games, though commercial also rose £0.4m (16%) to £2.7m. Match day was “static” at £5.6m.

I recently wrote about the importance of the cash flow statement in assessing the financial performance of a football club, focusing on the Premier League. Since then I have had a few requests to do the same for the Championship, so let’s take a look in the following thread.
A club’s profit and loss account is easy to understand, i.e. basically revenue less expenses (mainly player wages), but this is a notional profit based on the accountants’ accruals concept, which can be very different from actual cash movements.
This is important, as the main reason that football clubs fail is cash flow problems. It does not matter how large your revenue is (or your profits are), if you do not have the cash to pay your players, suppliers or indeed the taxman, then you will find yourself in trouble.

A #MillwallLionesses thread about what's been going on, oop north.
(of the river)

There's plenty more to come on the subject, as we had hinted before (e.g. in the linked Tweet below), but for this thread we will concentrate on last season, 2018-19.

When @Diane_Culligan approached @MillwallLioness, it was on the basis of her self-reportedly "successful" prior involvements @HampsteadFC & @HampsteadWFC

When are you buffoons going to Cease & Desist with the clowning around?

When will Mgmt Assign the #MillwallLionesses .com DNS?
