In Nigeria, after the era of military rule from 1984 to 1999, the return of Democracy in 1999 saw an effort to develop institutions. This happened largely under the Olusegun Obasanjo presidency.
Examples of institutions established in this period included the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC @officialEFCC ), Independent Corrupt Practices Commision, Pension Commission @PenComNig , Bureau of Public Enterprises, and Buteau of Public Procurement @BPP_NG.
These institutions were all created by legislation, giving them a sound basis in law and public policy. Although their track record has been mixed, their existence has created an institutional foundation on which we can build, with better governance, to make them more effective.

national/international experience of best practice standards of good governance. Other elements of a clear vision include political and institutional will, preparation, and proactive readiness to govern.
The next President of Nigeria should:
- use the transition period between winning an election and swearing-in to finalize plans he/she should have already made to hit the ground running.
- Appoint key presidency officials such as Secretary to the Government , National Security

Governance is basically how decisions are made and implemented. “Leaders” who think they have earned that description because they’re good at vote-winning (or rigging) tricks of partisan politics but have no clue how to govern effectively, have kept Nigeria poor.
It’s time for Nigeria to be governed in a fundamentally better manner. How a leader governs is determined by his or her worldview, what kind of worldview, the absence of one, or how well developed such a worldview is. If it is narrow and sectarian, “governance”, for example,

With this in mind, given the current levels of unemployment, poverty and population growth, does @NGRPresident ‘s announcement of a Visa on Arrival (VoA) policy for all Africans passes this test, especially when we consider the contradiction of @NigeriaGov border closure policy?
The first set of questions a worldview asks and answers are: why is the world the way it is? Who are we as a people (country/nation) in it? Relevant to Nigeria: why have we become the “poverty capital” of the world, how do we change this situation of failure to one of success?

Our leaders sow distrust by seeking power on the basis, not of competence or any vision, but of tribal/religious allegiance. They sow distrust of the Nigerian state and govt by their corruption in office.

Our leaders have exploited these divisions instead of liberating and educating their citizens. But, in order to liberate and educate, the leader must have the substance to do so. You cannot give what you don’t have. As the late Fela Kuti put it: Teacher don’t teach me nonsense!”
Leadership for Nigeria requires that the leader be able to rally his or her countrymen and women around a common goal or destiny that is higher than what divides us. This is different from the narrow views that fuel ethnic/religious chauvinism that dominates our politics.
