2/ In June 2021, @linakhanFTC was appointed chair of the @FTC.

Since then, the agency has entered a new era of more effective, modern, and democratic enforcement to better protect consumers, workers, and independent businesses.
3/ While navigating a leadership transition during a pandemic, a merger wave, and unprecedented economic dominance driven by rampant concentration, @linakhanFTC steered the @FTC to protect families & businesses with stronger law enforcement.

With the Fourth of July right around the corner, we’ll be spotlighting the various monopolies you’ll likely encounter around the holiday. 🇺🇸

From fireworks to beer & hotels for your weekend getaway, these industries are controlled by one or a few corps.
2/ One of the most exciting things that Americans look forward to on the 4th is fireworks. 🧨

What most Americans do not know is that it’s nearly impossible to buy American-made fireworks to celebrate w/ on the 4th.

news-leader.com/story/news/loc…
3/ Because there are so few American-made fireworks, 98-99% of fireworks purchased in the U.S. come from China. 🎆

And one businessman controls ~70% of those fireworks, which has allowed him to raise prices & block competitors from entering the market.

This week, we’re talking about concentration in the health care industry.

From hospitals to insurers, pharmaceutical manufacturers, retail pharmacies, PBMs and everything in between…nearly every part of the health care industry is concentrated. 💊🏥🩺
2/ Among other things, the 2010 ACA made health care integration & consolidation an explicit goal.

But as a framer of the ACA realized in 2016, “having every provider in health care ‘owned’ by a single org is more likely to be a barrier to better care.”

3/ Hospital consolidation has become a crisis.

In fact, a 2017 @politico analysis estimated that 2/3s of all U.S. hospitals were part of a chain. 🏥
