Lots of places in #NovaScotia were named for their connections to mining – but #GoldRiver is NOT one of them!
#Gold was discovered in Gold River, #LunenburgCounty, in September 1861 by Daniel Dimmock of nearby #Chester.
#nspoli #cbpoli @Pier12Hugh @BernJordanMP ImageImageImage
However, #GoldRiver is believed to have been named after a Mr. Gould, an early settler, and it’s original name was Gould River. The name was changed to Gold River before #gold was discovered there.

The area produced 7610 ounces of #gold between 1881-1940 and today it is beautiful natural space and a bunch of homes on Lacey Mines Road.

Misconceptions about modern #gold mining stem from historical mining practices that we agree were not good enough. No industry took proper care of the environment 100-150 years ago. However, historical sites like these have nothing to do with modern mining.

Modern mining is a sophisticated, science-based activity that takes proper care of the environment. Nova Scotia mines are stringently regulated by the provincial and federal governments.

Some people have questions about how we manage the environment, so below is information on some of the questions commonly raised.

Gold has many uses, including in all electronics and in medicine (i.e. treating cancer, pacemakers, surgical equipment...).
But how did #NovaScotia's #gold deposits form?
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton @ChenderMLA @AllanMacMaster @HomeMattersCB @TimHoustonNS @LarryHarrisonPC ImageImageImage
All #gold on Earth formed billions of years ago in stars that over-heated and blew up. Gold formed in the heat of the explosions and then floated around space. As rock, dust and other materials came together to form Earth, gold was distributed around the planet.

400 million years ago North Africa and North America started colliding. Sub-sea sediments were squished between the tectonic plates, upthrusted and folded as they turned into rock.

The #MountUniacke #Gold District in #HantsCounty was so promising that between 1866-1867, the number of houses in the area grew from two to over 500 and over 200 residents. In fact, by mid-1866, more land was held under leases and prospecting licences in...

By the end of 1867, three stamp mills had been built for processing ore and production increased from 72 ounces of gold in 1866 to 1,622 ounces in 1867.

#NovaScotia had its first two gold rushes in the second half of the 1800s, in the same era that gold rushes happened in California (1848-1855) and the Yukon (1896-1899). But #NS#gold deposits were very different from the ones mined in California and the Yukon.

Most #NovaScotia #gold is in quartz veins that started forming 400 million years ago as North Africa and North America started colliding. Sub-sea sediments were squished between the tectonic plates, upthrusted and folded as they turned into rock. This allowed fluid...

...to leach gold from rock deep underground and flow into cracks in rock closer to surface, forming veins of quartz and gold as the fluid eventually cooled and hardened. The #MooseRiver gold mine and other deposits along the eastern shore currently being explored formed this way. Image

Gold in Clayton Park?!
There were reportedly several small-scale gold mines on Geizer Hill starting at the end of the 1800s.

Geizer Hill, the other side of hwy 102 from #BayersLake, was forested back then. An article in the Feb. 1898 edition of Canadian Mining Reviews even described it as being “about three miles from Halifax,” a reminder of how much #Halifax has grown over the past century.
#nspoli Image
According to the article, “a trial run of one ton [of ore] gave six penny weights, eight grains." One penny weight is 1.5 grams so this test of the ore produced about 9 grams of #gold, or a 1/3 of an ounce.

Most of the mining and development in this district was done by the Oxford #Gold Mining Company which was very active from 1881-1896. By 1882 Oxford had acquired a number of areas north of the lake, erected a 10-stamp mill and become a steady producer.
#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia Image
Under J. M. Reid, the company’s mine manager, Lake Catcha became one of the most productive #gold districts in Nova Scotia.
Unfortunately, Reid had to quit work in late 1894 due to health issues after running the Oxford mine for 10 years.

Mining is part of #NovaScotia’s heritage and many communities benefit from tourism attractions related to historical mining. In fact, this 1889 flyer advertised #gold mines near #Caledonia, #QueensCounty, as tourist attractions to people from Boston!

#nspoli @RegionofQueens #NS Image
It says, “Many tourists will find a profitable and interesting diversion in visiting the various gold mines within easy reach of their boarding places.”

It describes gold processing as “curious and interesting, and well repays an intelligent sight-seer for a few days of travel and observation.”

#Gold was discovered in Gays River, Colchester County, by George Gay and Berry Corbett on their adjoining farms in June 1862. Unfortunately, the pair initially charged exorbitant prices for accessing their properties which delayed prospecting and mining.

Gold was discovered in Renfrew, originally known as Nine Mile River, in 1861 by William Thompson who found a boulder that contained #gold on the banks of the brook near his saw mill. Later that year, John McPhee discovered additional quartz veins near Thompson's mill.
#nspoli #NS ImageImage
These discoveries led to a swirl of activity by many small companies and prospectors staking claims.
Production began in 1862 but didn't boom until 1863 when #gold recovery more than doubled from 308 ounces in 1862 to 785 ounces in 1863.
#nspoli #novascotia #nshistory #mining Image
In 1864 mining increased significantly but no crushing of ore was done during the last three months of the year due to a drought, water being essential to the process.

A rising tide lifts all boats. That’s as true today as it was in the late 1880s when 20 years of #gold #mining in the Whiteburn played a key role in building Northern #QueensCounty.

Gold was discovered in Whiteburn, six miles southwest of #Caledonia, in 1885. A forest fire reportedly ravaged the area and uncovered the gold. Jim McGuire, supposedly hiding out from the tax collector, found it in the barrens near his home and triggered the Whiteburn #gold rush. Image
It’s said that he registered the find in his brother’s name and hid his earnings - $5000 in the first year - in the floorboards of his cousin’s house to throw the authorities off his trail.
By 1887 three mines and mills were operating and mining continued until 1905.

Establishing #gold districts allowed @nsgov to administer NS mineral rights. It also helped avoid the crime, violence and disease that accompanied gold rushes in California (1848) and Australia (1851) by establishing a legal process for staking claims and managing areas.

Some #NovaScotia #gold districts saw a lot of #mining but many saw very little.
The #Tangier gold district was one of the first established. Gold was discovered there in 1860 and over 600 miners and prospectors arrived in the Tangier area within a year.

This is the anticline at the #MooseRiver #gold mine. It was formed by the collision of #NorthAmerica and #NorthAfrica 325 million years ago. Layers of horizontal sedimentary rock were crumpled into #anticlines (domes) and #synclines (troughs) - a series of rock waves.
#nspoli #NS ImageImageImage
The #Anticline hosts the Touquoy #gold deposit. Its domes trapped melted, gold-containing rock as it rose from deep in #earth's crust. It flowed into fractures in the rock, creating quartz veins with gold. There are also tiny disseminated particles of gold throughout.

@Guysboro Water Management: Mine operators are required to treat, strictly monitor and test water, and report to @nsgov. Water is usually recycled on-site. Water released back into a river or lake is usually cleaner after it has been used in a mine or quarry than it was beforehand.
