🧵1/9 Finally caught up with last night's #moralmaze om @BBCRadio4 on suicide. My colleague @waterssarah56 was a witness following our paper on Ofsted - a few observations

2/9 Panellists kept focussing on lack of a single cause for an individual suicide as reason not to investigate deaths - totally misses the point, which is to find patterns. That's what epidemiologists do
3/9 Even if we don't know all the reasons why a particular person killed themselves, we do know that there are underlying factors - like economic cycles & job losses - and they vary over time

On 'pies' and 'spaces' (They’re connected) #MoralMaze
@AdamWagner1 argues that ‘rights are not like pies’. To spell things out, boringly, his point is that rights are not a zero-sum game, that it is possible to increase one right or set of rights without reducing ...

another right or set of rights.
I think that he is correct, about some rights, and his example of equal marriage is a pretty good example.
But I think he is wrong about other rights, and especially about the rights in question.

Consider the pie metaphor. It’s supposed to be powerful because it conveys the idea that we are talking about big, abstract, social rules, roles and institutions, not something as simple as a pie.
As simple, material and *spatially constrained* as a chunk of pie. 3/

Why? Which rationale? #moralmaze @BBCRadio4 ?

1. TW are women. No females needed.
2. Females are the second sex and not equal moral beings. Their human rights and personhood do not count. Even in discussions regarding their own female categories.

@BBCRadio4 Feminist political and moral philosophy argues females are excluded from androcentric citizenship which centres the interests of males. This is a perfect example. Females are demoted within their sports categories and not even included in eligibility discussions. Androcentric.
This is what female Olympians think. Women's political and moral voices matter. Particularly those whose interests are affected by decisions made without them:

Michael Buerk Andrew Doyle Nesrine Malik Mona Siddiqui & Tim Stanley didn't know I was still on the call after we recorded #MoralMaze @BBCRadio4 Here are quotes & approximations of what they said about me. We know how they speak about us but it's another thing to hear them do it
Michael Buerk: That was good wasn't it. That first speaker, she really got the Maxim guns out didn't she?

Nesrine Malik: Yeah, she was great. It's good to have someone like that on.
NB. The Maxim gun was invented by Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim in 1884. It was the first recoil-operated machine gun. It has been called "the weapon most associated with the British imperial conquest", and was used in colonial wars by other countries between 1886 and 1914 (wikipedia).

Outrageous does not even begin what the BBC are doing tonight.

@BBCRadio4's #MoralMaze has Melanie Phillips on, to discuss Islamophobia.

The same Phillips who writes vile pieces and uses far-right Islamophobic tropes about Muslims.

ICYMI: Here's Melanie Phillips on the "fiction" of Islamophobia - annotated for ease

Here is Melanie Phillips alongside Katie Hopkins & Robert Spencer at the David Horowitz Freedom Center (DHFC)

ICYMI: Spencer is so extreme that he was banned from entering UK & DHFC published pieces defending Robinson, and has even lobbied for him to address US politicians

We are also pleased to see this debate becoming more mainstream in public debate & mainstream media. This is what needs to happen if we are to come to a progressive solution. You don't get progress by silencing people. It's great that @guardian is doing more to engage. Thank you.
This brilliant piece by @suzanne_moore in @guardian has spoken for thousands of women who had been feeling disregarded. We need more of these pieces. theguardian.com/society/commen…
