1/ This is The Step. It was a busy and lively local bar, café and restaurant from 2011 to 2020. Lots of us made friends and had lovely nights out there, enjoying fab cocktails and food. It was described as one of the hearts of the community. The Step bar and restaurantA cocktail in a martini glassA group of people at a pub quizA man and woman with cocktails
2/ In 2020, the owners moved away and it was closed. Everyone was gutted. It was bought by developers who tried to turn it into tiny flats, but locals objected strongly to the planning applications and they gave up on their plans. Sadly by this point the building was gutted too. The inside of an empty building with the floor and ceiling s
3/ But all is not lost! We now have a chance to open it again. We plan to buy the building, renovate it and bring in a tenant who will create a space with community spirit at its heart. We already have several interested tenants lined up.

🧵If only all Fridays' could be filled with sunshine & visits to 6 #communityowned businesses!! Great day out visiting groups in Herefordshire & Worcestershire with our Head of #ComBiz @CSpendley. A thread... with a few selfies included! 1/10
First stop was @PeopletonPantry where we met the shop manager, Jennie. Great to hear that as a @PlunkettFoundat member, Jennie was looking forward to completing their FREE #combiz health check with @AlisonMacklin2 in a few week's time! 2/10
Next up it was the amazing Yarpole Community Shop, which you'll find in Saint Leonard's Church. Such an inspiring example for any group looking to co-locate a #combiz in a place of worship... something @PlunkettFoundat can also offer FREE advice on thanks to @Benefacttrust. 3/10

Delighted to have @ThePubChampion chairing our roundtable about future support for #communitypubs across the UK. @vidhyaalakeson & @James_Plunkett are on hand to talk #MoreThanAPub learning & @PlunkettFoundat strategy to grow the community pub network. @peoplesbiz @mhclg
As @ThePubChampion points out the Community Ownership Fund will be a boost for #combiz initiatives such as #communitypubs... However this funding must be matched by support for organisations like @PlunkettFoundat & partners at this meeting to support the groups on the ground.
Great to hear @vidhyaalakeson talking about the critical importance of pubs in social infrastructure. The #MoreThanAPub programme, funded by @peoplesbiz over past 6 years aimed support #communitypubs to offer more for their local area. They are a "hub" of key services.

An idea to build a brighter future for local news instead of applying band-aids to the moment:

Create a revolving loan fund to start, support and expand local news co-ops and nonprofits.

I think $300M would work. But why should the feds? And how? A long thread... /1
Let's say that $300M funds 500 news co-ops and nonprofits, starting to offset the 2,100 newspapers @businessofnews says we've lost since 2004.

A revolving loan fund means that money goes out then comes back to fund another 500 and so on. /2 usnewsdeserts.com/#1536248669354…
There's precedent too.

In the 1930s, 90% of rural homes didn't have electricity because private companies wouldn't invest in it.

You think quality journalism is expensive? Ha! Imagine running power lines out to the boonies when 97% of US landmass is rural. /3
