Paolo Simoncelli perdió a Marco, su único hijo, el 23 de octubre de 2011. Marco, entonces de 24 años, campeón mundial de 250 cc. en 2008, se cayó durante el GP de Malasia de MotoGP, fue golpeado por otro piloto y murió en el acto. Paolo miraba la carrera a pocos metros del lugar.

A Marco se lo conocía como SuperSic y usaba el número 58. A la multitudinaria despedida de sus restos, llevada a cabo en Coriano, un pueblo de 8.000 habitantes en Rímini, acudieron unas 15.000 personas. 📸@MotoGP
