Today's @the_hindu says concern on the #Mullaperiyar Dam was first raised in 1979.

As our research & memory is so short, let me share @timesofindia Mumbai Edition dated 11.05.1962 (a typed copy from Kerala Secretariat files)
Interestingly, who raised alarm about safety of Mullaperiyar Dam after independence?

Not Kerala Engineers, it is TN PWD Engineers who said that the dam is seismically & hydrologically NOT SAFE and recommended strengthening!

They even published papers in reputed journals!
I have all documents with me to substantiate the above tweets, it is the consistent and continuous meticulous research I am doing since 2006.

Everything will be included, when I publish my book on #mullaiperiyardam.

I will write the book for the future generations

Justice AM Khanwilkar: one is the stability of the dam and the committee should take proactive steps with regard to that and also steps needs to be taken so that zero loss is caused whether due to floods or anything else. Tell us regarding this.
ASG: Please check the internal page of the report. It says raising the level from 136 to 142 feet will lead to jeopardising the issue. Then studies were asked to be conducted by National Disaster Management Authority

If you have EVER wondered why the TN people have been so desperate to keep the #Mullaperiyar dam level at 142, here is the reason why. Vaigai dam's only way to fill up is through the 2300 cusecs of water it receives from MP dam.. It's filled to 69 out of 72 feet now! #Vaigai (1)
#Mullaperiyar water which just augments Periyar river in Kerala side, actually helps 5 big districts in TN side when it's allowed to fill the #VaigaiDam like it's done this year. Vaigai dam gets filled once in a decade, as a matter of fact without MP, it stands no chance (2)
Instead of getting swayed spuriously by the cunning characters like @jamewils who are propelled by Kerala gov & media, the courts should take a deep look at this Vaigai dam's significance to 5 driest districts of TN @ChennaiRains @sumanthraman #Mullaperiyar (3)

It started heavily even in Thiruvananthapuram. Heard that Mudirapuzha arm of Periyar receiving heavy rainfall and Madupetty Dam shutters are opened. Mullaperiyar is at 136.60 ft at 12noon today. #KeralaFloods
The water from Madupetty Dam will flow through Munnar to Kallarkutty and Lower Periyar Dams and will join Bhoothankettu Barrage in Periyar River..
Mudirapuzha arm of Periyar is used to receive heavy rainfall. This sub basin along with Mullaperiyar catchment created great havocs in 1924 and 1961 floods.
