A. 74 (not 79 as I previously posted). I've compiled a montage dedicated to LNP’s morally bankrupt version of democracy. I estimated each use of SO-80 uses 7 mins (motion moved, vote, division, & settled down)
This means 8+ hrs of time that should be spent debating legislation has been wasted. Approx ~1,000 hours of MP’s time has been wasted.
Another way the LNP wastes $$$ & avoids accountability. Why have parliament if the LNP make a mockery of democratic processes

Both my Part 1 & Part 2 threads have shown the LNP abusing Standing Order 80 & gagging debate with no concerns they are stopping ~half of Australia’s population being represented in Parliament.

The LNP have voted more times to stop debate than they have voted on actual legislation.
The sardonic irony of Tony Burke being gagged whilst talking about the gagging of debate is a perfect display of LNPs disdain for democracy
This corruption of democratic process should be front pg news & lead news items. Standing Order 80 (as we know it) was created in 1906 when members had no time limits on speeches. When it was created there was great concern about its potential misuse.
A story in the Newspaper in 1905 explained the potential abuse. Prime Minister Deakin said reassuringly “that it would rarely be used & not for partisan purposes” Deakin was unable to imagine 115 years later we would have the most corrupt govt in our history.

I am going to #tellmynewscorpstory. In 2008 Quadrant published a vicious attack on me & three colleagues for being critical of US counterterrorism policy, which libelled us as pro-terrorist & included numerous other falsehoods. The Australian got excited.…
They called up for an interview, where I had to defend myself against these scurrilous lies. They demanded I sit for a photo threatening to take one off the internet if I didn’t. & got me with an ADFA cadet walking past in a slouch hat. Front page Saturday edition iconography.
Monday, another story in the Oz & the Herald Sun publishes that we support the Bali terrorists in UNSW classrooms and gets a quote from Jim Molan. They spoke to me and my head for an hour, to no students. It’s all fiction, none of our quotes appear. Molan calls me up to apologise

Dan trying to explain manners, facts and human decency to a two-bob Murdoch watch that thinks it’s a Rolex. You could not believe how appalling Peta Credlin’s behaviour was today. #MurdochRoyalCommission #IStandWithDan
And some Trump lover below suggested Dan Andrews didn’t let Credlin finish a question, when she didn’t let him answer any - even shouting over the top of him that Border Force is responsible for Ruby Princess. #MurdochRoyalCommission
Sorry, Phillip, all due respect meant.

Since we’re all talking about the #MurdochRoyalCommission and complaining about media bias (#ThisIsNotJournalism), I thought it might be a good time to talk about what good journalism looks like, and why we can’t go on the way we are. A thread👇🏻
In Rudd’s statement urging people to support a Murdoch RC, he said media is no longer a level playing field. Media is supposed to represent a market place of ideas where groups compete fairly to have their perspectives heard. Different sides of politics, different interests etc.
This ideal is the reason Rudd called for a stronger diversity in Australian media outlets. Australia is the most concentrated media industry in the world. This, coupled with Murdoch’s partisan media and his huge share, means our media is anything but a level playing field.

A case study of the Murdoch method: How lies are used to manipulate the truth. Remember this racist, sexist cartoon from the @australian that derided US Vice-Presidential candidate @KamalaHarris as a "little brown girl"? THREAD
Amid global outrage at this cartoon, Murdoch editor Chris (I'm not a racist) Dore demanded his staff step up to defend his appalling decision to publish it. So who stepped up? None other than Murdoch "journalist" Chris (veteran Liberal Party staffer) Kenny! 2/8
The central premise of Kenny's argument is simply untrue. He says Joe Biden "openly and proudly imposed criteria that his vice-presidential running mate would be a woman of colour" and selected Harris on "publicly stated race and gender criteria". Lies. 3/8
