🧵A thread - Same birthday gift three years in a row: a lesson in public health and politics
1/ It was the evening of Thursday, March 12, 2020. I was out shopping with my daughters. My youngest daughter had a gift certificate tucked in her purse. She was eager to find something to spend it on.
2/ Having turned nine years old, the day before, she was still bouncing with happy birthday joy.
Walking through the aisles of toys, I heard a notification on my phone. A text from a friend relayed the news that schools would remain closed after the upcoming March break.

1/ SARS-Cov-2 is airborne and always has been.

Here's a quick 🧵 on where to find high-quality, made-in-America NIOSH-certified N95 masks that you may not know about.

Disclosure: I have no relationship with these companies, just an abiding interest in a secure, healthy USA.
2/ Indiana Face Mask Company.

Vertically integrated manufacturer that scaled up a new factory to ensure a secure supply of USA-made N95 masks. Quantity discounts available. Affordable.

Many people have been asking about KF94 masks lately.

I lived in South Korea for ~4 yrs, and since early last year, I regularly bought KF94 masks from South Korea.

Here are a few tips on buying KF94 masks in PH. A thread.🧵 1/
First, what is KF94?

It is the Korean standard high-filtration mask. "KF" in KF94 stands for "Korea Filter" and "94" indicates the 94% filtration efficacy of the mask. It's comparable to KN95s from China and N95s from the US. 2/
Why upgrade your mask?

I got home this morning after an overnight shift in the pediatric emergency department.

I rarely share personal reflections based on my clinical work as a #pediatrician via @twitter, but I'm allowing myself this exception.

2/ I started my winter holiday stretch of shifts by working on #Christmas evening and finished it by ringing in the #NewYear last night while taking care of sick & injured children with a phenomenal (but overworked & somewhat demoralized team) at the children's hospital.
3/ Let me re-iterate at the outset that I've always been opposed to @francoislegault @coalitionavenir's imposition of the #curfew because of its harmful impacts on many of the most marginalized people in society.

Stop making fun of older kids who still believe in Santa Claus, there are ID docs who still believe in droplet transmission.
If you think I am being harsh, there is no such thing as pure droplet transmission. This is simply physics. Even a purely upper respiratory tract infection produces infectious aerosols as well as droplets. Lower respiratory infections are all aerosol transmission.
Your loose surgical mask will catch droplets. But aerosols will go around the gaps. You need to close the gap by wearing well-fitting medical-grade masks. #N95sForAll
