An FBI investigation into #NCAA basketball corruption was hailed as a watershed moment in college sports.

But records offer new details about the lead agent’s role and an investigation that focused on lesser-known coaches and middlemen, most of them Black

NEWS 🧵: I've filed a federal lawsuit against @WestPoint_USMA over its (and the other service academies') policy of denying FOIA requests related to Army's athletic department.

I explain more in @Sportico today:

sportico.com/law/analysis/2…

#sportslaw #journalism #NCAA #Army
In 2015, Army followed in the footsteps of Air Force and Navy, by petitioning Congress to allow it to spin off its athletic department as a separate nonprofit organization—Army West Point Athletic Association (AWPAA)—which would then manage its NCAA sports programs.
Since then, it has asserted that its entire athletics operation is outside the bounds of the Freedom of Information Act. Though secrecy was perhaps not its main rationale for seeking to privatize athletics, it seems to have been treated as at least an ancillary benefit.

Exportación de jugadores (transferidos, cedidos o agentes libres) de las Américas hacia Europa entre invierno y verano de este año:

72 🇺🇸 #MLS
67 🇧🇷 Brasileirao
37 🇦🇷 Liga AFA
27 🇺🇸 #USL
16 🇨🇦 #CanPL
14 🇺🇾 Primera
13 🇨🇴 DiMayor
11 🇲🇽 Liga MX
9 🇪🇨 Serie A
2 🇺🇸 #NCAA
#CanPL

Part of this #UNSPORTING situation is the need to ask.
This is the inevitable endpoint, right?
Bullying & gaslighting of female athletes, all for the sake of #sports organizations TRYING to be “inclusive” of (largely) privileged white males representing ~0.15% of the population.
Since I am both a former athlete, #sports program designer, and personal coach who also serves as president of a provincial sports organization (governance), my perspective of “big picture” informs me that retaking lost ground requires a coordinated effort.
One-off efforts …
…will make headlines but deep within #sport random boycotts or tweeting something will never be enough. Nothing wrong with these initial measures, but something much more comprehensive is going to be required, involving:
Athletes
Coaches
Families
Sponsors
Bureaucrats
Politicians

Now it is about half a year since COVID-19 pandemic started all around the world. For me the day when it was announced that everyone should be isolated in their homes was very special and I will remember this day as the most crazy day of my life
Let's start with a little pre story. As you know I am a member of the Drury swim team. In the first half of March we headed to Ohio State to compete at the National Championship - our final competition of the season. Every team was preparing for this meet the whole year
Drury University swimmers arrived at the Spire Olympic Center on the top of their physical conditions and in a good mood. On the arrival day there was a nice banquet where all the teams met together, sharing the expectations. Our athletes were ready to start the fight for the win

News: Mark Emmert today in a Senate hearing will plea to lawmakers to grant the #NCAA antitrust protection from lawsuits he claims “threaten” and “interfere” with the NCAA’s ability to modernize its rules, per his testimony obtained last night by @SInow.

The final page of Mark Emmert’s submitted testimony ahead of today’s Senate hearing is a plea for an antitrust exemption, which many lawmakers are vehemently against.

@SInow Mark Emmert will also tell US senators today that the #NCAA’s own NIL legislation is on track to be introduced Nov. 1, to be voted on by January and to become effective next August.

However, Emmert implores Congress to create a federal NIL bill to preempt state laws.

Let me get this straight. @joelklatt argues that playing college spring & fall football (which isn't necessary) is actually MORE dangerous for players than playing through #COVID__19 - When's the last time someone died on the football field? Because #COVID__19 has killed 130K
Not only is this absolutely wrong by any empirical measure it also speaks to the larger problem of how black lives are literally considered dispensable by college/professional and even most sports journalists. About 1% of #COVID__19 deaths are college aged acsh.org/news/2020/06/2…
So while @joelklatt argues there is "No" chance of player danger, that's just a 1% death rate, overall. Consider that almost HALF of all college football players are African American, where #COVID is twice as likely to result in death as in whites. ncaa.org/about/resource…

NEWS: #NCAA FB Oversight Committee is set to approve this week a preseason practice plan that'll include walk-thrus - with a ball! - starting in mid/late July.

The plan, now in ink, is being circulated to schools. More progress toward an on-time kickoff.

Leaders are now turning attention to protocols for practices & sidelines.

Some believe coaches 65+ should wear masks during games. (Saban is 68).

As for camp, some coaches plan to hold 2-4 practices a day with different players to keep groups small

Conference commissioners are exploring in-season universal testing protocols.

The latest discussions involve a road team testing each of its athletes Friday morning before it departs. Both teams would then conduct tests Saturday morning before the game.

#NCAA president Mark Emmert told Congressional leaders in a call that the possibility still exists some schools won’t play football this fall.

That means a logistical scheduling nightmare that officials are exploring, the House Minority Whip tells @SInow

bit.ly/3dzkiuZ
@SInow After call with #NFL & #NCAA leaders, Rep. Steve Scalise encouraged that there will be a FB season with fans, tho they may be wearing masks and getting temp checks.

“I think that’s going to be part of a testing protocol for a lot of sports leagues.”

@SInow Virus spikes in states/within teams could interrupt & delay teams from kickoff.

As reported at @SInow on May 22, there’s consensus on a 6-week preseason starting in late July: 2 weeks OTAs & a 4-week camp. Teams must get in the 4 weeks before kicking off

It’s not a long shot anymore - college football is on a path to an on-time kickoff.

To cap an optimistic week, #NCAA leaders are exploring a preseason practice plan of NFL-style OTAs & then a 4-week camp that’d be required before teams can begin a season

Inside discussions of the DI Football Oversight Committee.

-expectations are for 3/4s of FBS teams to start work by June 15
- by July 1, committee might allow normal "required" summer workouts
- preseason plan: 2 week OTAs in July + 4 week camp in August

bit.ly/2LNGxRu
As for fall sports other than football and basketball - ie volleyball, cross country, soccer - the Committee plans to rule on their return to campus as soon as today/early next week.

Committee ran out of time Wednesday during deliberations.

Retailers are ready to strike group licensing deals with college sports to resurrect the NCAA Football game, create trading cards & develop merchandise.

A deep dive on how & why the #NCAA’s #NIL report prevents return of the video game & pits players against their own schools.

Exploring the future of group licensing, player unions & employment relationships

“The NCAA has created an unworkable solution.”

No group licensing hurts unheralded players - linemen, kickers, etc. - who don’t have the branding to garner $$$ endorsement deals.

Legal & industry experts shoot down the #NCAA’s claim that a union is necessary for group licensing.

How a historic day turned into an ‘L’ for the #NCAA, Congressmen say - its #NIL report too vague & restrictive.

Buried in this: Grievances coaches have with #NCAA #NIL report.

Concerns over rogue boosters, shady agents, issues w/ institutional control & unenforceable regulations.

The #NCAA’s #NIL report?

It totaled 14,000 words, 31 pages, 18 subsections, 7 sections and, as one lawmaker put it, zero concrete ideas.

Florida’s NIL law: 2 pages.

“I feel like every time they take a stab at it they make it more difficult.”

Rep. Donna Shalala (D-FL), the former Wisconsin and Miami school president, on the #NCAA's #NIL report:

"My initial reaction was that it is a PR document."
Asked of her reaction to the #NCAA #NIL proposal if she were still a school president, Shalala quipped: "I'd say, 'Why are we paying all these people at the NCAA if they can't give us more detail than this?' I'd be standing in the middle of my office scratching my head."
Shalala is told about the involvement that boosters and agents will have in proposed #NCAA #NIL ventures.

"It’s a nightmare. For years we fought the agents and the boosters and now we’re letting them back in?"

Sen Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn), one of the harshest Mark Emmert critics, is asked about #NCAA wanting antitrust exemption.

"I want to see them learn how to make a decision (first). Wouldn’t that be nice? They don’t have to committee everything to death."
Blackburn believes Congress can pass an NIL bill this year.

"The Senate can walk and chew gum at the same time. We are going to be able to confirm judges, do work on privacy…. We’re going to continue to do it all."
Blackburn: "We were giving the NCAA a chance to get their act together, but I think their leadership is weak. They are tentative, have shown they can’t come through with a requisite list of standards. If they are that ineffective, we will do this for them."

NIL, Congress & the NCAA: a battle far from over.

While the #NCAA takes a progressive step on athlete compensation this week, a skeptical Congress looks on.

From Capitol Hill, a deep dive exploring federal NIL legislation.

“NIL is totally insufficient."

NIL laws will have sweeping impacts on college sports, ADs tell @SInow, the most noteworthy of which is the widening of competitive gaps among schools.

The rich (schools in large metros with big donor bases) will get richer.

“This is going to be chaos.”

bit.ly/2S9VC3y
On NIL, school presidents are “panicked,” ADs are “scratching their heads,” and working group is “conflicted.”

While consensus in Congress is rare, lawmakers agree on 1 thing, says Rep. Donna Shalala

“They have nothing but negative feelings for the NCAA"
