I need to talk about what happened at the NC House K-12 Education Committee today, because it's a distillation of the arrogance and disregard with which the #NCGOP is leading the legislature right now. A 🧵
I was at the meeting because the Committee was considering SB49, colloquially known as the "Don't Say Gay" Bill. The Bill, as its sponsors acknowledge, is mostly just a recitation of rights parents already have. What's new are forced-outing mandates (and a few other bad things)
As usual, I showed up about 40 minutes early; by that point there was a line at the door. Some of the folks waiting to get inside had been turned away from another Committee meeting where an anti-Trans bill was being heard. We waited until about 10:48 to be allowed in the room.

I just read through the entire bill. I have many thoughts. For now, I’m walking in to my high risk OB NC clinic knowing my career will entirely change after this is passed.

Follow the thread below as I add my concerns and surprises after reading this bill 🧵
The TL;DR version is:

•12 weeks abortion legal for any reason
•Abortion legal up to 20 wks for rape/incest
•Abortion legal up to 24 weeks for “life limiting diagnoses”
•Abortion legal at any stage for mother’s life.

We should know by now it’s not that simple.
I work in high risk OB. We do not perform abortions, but we do refer. There are ab clinics around that have to stay hidden so their patients aren’t attacked nor bombarded with protestors. This is not an “abortion tolerant” state, yet NC has become a southern “sanctuary city”.

A follow-up #LeadWithLeandro thread. Last week, I talked about how extraordinary the NCGA's stance in the case is, and someone asked me what the Court can do to make the Legislature comply. I did some research over the weekend, and here's what I learned: 1/
First, most (possibly all) state constitutions guarantee the state's children the right to a public education, and unsurprisingly, there has been litigation in many states about what counts as a Constitutionally sound education, how it should be provided and what it costs. 2/
As best as I can tell, in typical cases where there has been litigation, the Court has made a determination of what a Constitutionally sound education means in that state and has issued opinions ordering the State to comply. 3/

"If negotiating a post-Donald-Trump world has been a disorienting experience for Republicans around the country, it is especially acute in NC, a state that has become a polarized, and nearly deadlocked, partisan battleground."

Granted, the GOP base is composed of both registered Republicans + registered unaffiliated voters who vote GOP.

But since November, the greatest # of defections from party registration has been among registered Republicans in NC's 7M voters (data courtesy of @NCSBE):

There are a lot of narratives building around what happened in state legislative races, but, in NC, Dems in most competitive legislative districts actually OVERPERFORMED Biden. #ncpol #ncga
NC saw a huge Trump-driven turnout surge in many parts of the state, especially Eastern & Western NC, that overwhelmed our chances in a number of competitive districts, but Dem legislative performance was comparatively strong.
In the competitive Dem-held mountain districts, both Dem incumbents significantly outperformed Biden. @RayRussellforNC (NC-H93, Boone area) beat Biden's margin by 3.8 points.

NCGOP ties to NC Sons of Confederate Veterans & white supremacy agenda go deep.

Deeper than just confed flags & white power shouts at #NCGOP rallies.
Deeper than a couple dozen campaign donations.

Really deep.

Been a long fall for NC GOP to being a foremost US white supremacy political party.

In 1870, it was #NCpol Republican Constable Wyatt Outlaw that took reasonable, non-lethal action against KKK.

Today's #NCGOP mocks Outlaw's subsequent lynching.

We all know 19th century KKK were Dems, Repubs freed slaves.

We know bc GOP always tells us. Forest did it. So did Hawthorne.

Bc they don't have much else to say about race in polite company.

Bc today #NCGOP is a white supremacy party, #ncpol.

In case everyone forgot the #nc09 scandal because I sure as fuck have not. The @GOP should be reminded of this every time they clutch their pearls over made-up fraud by voters based on disinformation these exact same people have been circulating baselessly for years about
undocumented people voting. They should be laughed out of the room every time they invoke that specter cnn.com/2018/12/04/pol…
