Best "all smoke, no fire" Oilers trade rumor, all-time:
It took me MUCH longer than it should have to remember "Dany Heatly", likely due to the psychic after-effects of this whole sad episode.

IIRC it was Cogs, Pens, Smiddy but Dany was like "wait, what???!" like some hacky 90s comedian?
If the NHL was the Sopranos, Dany Heatly would be AJ (Anthony Junior) Soprano, hand's down.

What current/former NHLer aligns with another Sopranos character?

Not based on looks - but personality

A few hours ago, the @OttawaCitizen posted an article entitled, "Face to Face with COVID deniers in the ICU."

Here is the reply I posted:

- It is OK to believe that some people will get really sick...and some with die from COVID-19.

1/...
- It is OK to realize that the vast majority of those patients are elderly, have at least 3 comorbidities (affecting heart, lungs, immune system), AND live in a cohorted care setting - such as LTC.

2/...
- It is OK to realize that smoking is a HUGE risk factor for respiratory infections - and one that is often forgotten or discounted by patients, the health care system and media.
(Still looking at vaping and CV-19...)

A few hours ago, the Ottawa Citizen posted an article "Front-line hospital workers say they feel betrayed by the province."
(ottawacitizen.com/news/local-new… )

However, this (clearly) union-fueled article completely missed the mark.

1/...
Yes, we are feeling worn down and betrayed by the Governments of Ontario & Canada.

But we are feeling worn down and betrayed NOT by the pandemic (aka the disease itself) - but by the governments' response to it:

1) that has:

- riddled our children with fear,

2/...
- riddled our patients with fear,

- riddle our employers with fear,

- paralyzed those outside our hallowed halls with fear...

2) that has lead to myopic, singular-focused government & public health policy - that has:

- undermined democracy,

SCOOP: The federal government has approved a travel exemption for the final two rounds of the Stanley Cup playoffs that would allow NHL teams to cross the Canada-US border without having to quarantine.

#nhl #StanleyCup #StanleyCupPlayoffs
Federal immigration minister Marco Mendicino issued a national interest exemption to the league that would allow the cross border travel under specific conditions.
NHL players and team personnel will enter and leave the country using private planes. Players and club personnel from the United States to Canada will be subject to pre and post-arrival testing in addition to daily covid tests.

1/5 #Oilers hockey over this year. Enjoyed season, too bad ended early. Thoughts:
We lost cause we got out goalied and out coached. Smith was very solid but a level below Hellebuyck in every game. Not blaming him as he was great but #Oilersnation #nhl #OilersJets #EdmontonOilers
2/5
needed a difference maker. Hellebuyck is a Vezina winner and showed it. Needed that big save though to get us a win.
We couldn’t up our game in other ways to compensate for the fact that they had awesome tending.
Different penalty standards in playoffs hurts Oilers too.
3/5
Odd coaching moves:
- Would have liked to see 13 with 97 and 29 in OT as 13 played with 97 all year. Not sure what the thought process was there.
- Benching 74 all OT after he was on first d pair the day before.
- 9 forwards and 4 d for all OT is not a winning formula.

Health Minister Adrian Dix just spoke to this story. Says Vancouver is the best possible place for the NHL to come because the province enforces public health rules thoroughly and completely. #bcpoli #covid19BC #NHL
Dix says the players, the fans, those working at arenas and British Columbians in general expect the rules to be followed. "That is our advantage in this, it is not our disadvantage." #bcpoli #covid19bc
Dix says the NHL will make it's decision and have consideration that may make Vegas a better place than Vancouver. "But frankly, if you are talking the health of the players, if you are talking about health of society....this is place to come and I hope they come." #bcpoli #NHL

Today is the start of a new month so all month long I thought I would share a video every day of some of my favorite sports moments in my lifetime. These are in no particular order because that would be impossible to do! Hope you guys enjoy!
Day 1: Howie Kendrick’s go-ahead home run off the right-field foul pole in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series.

Day 2: Paul Pierce banks in the game winning buzzer beater in game 3 of the 2015 Eastern Conference semifinals.

So for all the international viewers who have no other sport to watch, basically what’s happening in this strange sport is when the ball hits the post and goes in that’s not a goal #AFLTigersBlues
If they catch the ball in the air no one is allowed to tackle them, unlike #nfl
If the ball hits the ground first and someone picks it up you should tackle them to the ground #nfl

Let’s look at how flu actually spreads, day by day during an outbreak, in a defined population, such as a college. While many transmissions are cryptic (and nowadays identified via phylogenetic methods, eg by @trvrb), many transmissions occur via observed social network ties. 1/
In 2009, there was a (limited) pandemic of H1N1 flu. It struck locales around the world, including colleges such as @Harvard. We mapped the social networks of 744 students and prospectively tracked their flu symptoms and vaccination status with daily precision. 2/
Here is what the social network of students being struck by H1N1 outbreak over a period of three months looked like. Infected individuals are colored red, friends of infected individuals are colored yellow, and node size is proportional to the number of friends infected. 3/

As 2019 comes to a close, I thought this would be a great time to share my past 10 years in #PxP #playbyplay, a great decade personally when it comes to my work, but certainly a roller coaster ride at times (con't):

Anyone who thinks @commie22 needs to lay off Babs just doesn’t understand how much hate players have for him. It’s beyond him scratching @commie22 or saying he was out of shape. #NHL players are a very very small population of athletes and people.
We share stories throughout the years with each other and for those outside the locker rooms, you will never truly understand some of the terrible undeserving things Babs has done to his some of his players. You don’t have to like all your coaches, but he is one
who 95% of his players can’t say a good thing about. With the ability to end players careers, he’s chosen to do so to long serving vets that have resulted in all his players turning against him. He’s used his power to turn teammates against each other, and choose to continuously

1) Today marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the #VelvetRevolution. Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this moment triggered a chain of events that would indirectly affect me in a myriad of ways. This #story is a bit rambling, but please hear me out… Image
2) First, let’s back things up to 3/31/90 - the final day of the #NHL regular season. I listened to the @penguins v. @BuffaloSabres on @KDKA 1020, as usual. But this was no ordinary game. Image
3) The #Pens needed a tie or win to advance to the playoffs. Also, #MarioLemieux was back in action for the first time in months. The stakes were high. I was 14 years old. This game meant the world to me. . Image

A thread about Gary Bettman, the NHL & how the league of denial used Todd Ewen’s case to cast doubt on a link between repeated brain injuries and CTE

Thank you to @rwesthead for covering the concussion hearing in depth

#NHL #FridayReads #CTE

tsn.ca/widow-of-forme…
2/ The widow of Todd Ewen sued the National Hockey League on Tuesday, claiming the #NHL cynically exploited a botched analysis of her husband’s brain, which later tested positive for #CTE

Even in death, former players are not safe

3/ “Unbeknownst to Kelli Ewen, Dr Lili-Naz Hazrati served as an expert witness for the #NHL in multidistrict litigation...”

"Had [Dr. Hazrati] disclosed her conflicts of interest, Kelli would never have sent Todd's brain to her” Ewen said

With the opt in/out date deadline on Jan 18th 4 the @NHL #concussion lawsuit I wanted to revisit this breakdown from @SheillaDingus on the red flags of the settlement:

1/ A potential life & death situation is noted, in which the #NHL says “live or die...

advocacyforfairnessinsports.org/nhl-concussion…
we don’t care, just don’t ask us for any money.” Players are instructed to file a claim from the Additional Payment Fund—if they live long enough

2/ The NHL control of testing procedure immediately drew a red flag. It is notable that the cost of testing is NOT included....
in the total value of the settlement but is instead an uncapped fund under COMPLETE control of the NHL

It seems odd that no one to my knowledge has reported this

“In the big picture the cost of these exams is de minimus, particularly when the NHL is in control of these exams”

Colin Campbell, the long-time disciplinarian — now the senior executive vice-president of hockey operations with the @NHL — is shown in correspondence to term anti-violence advocates alternately as “greenpeace pukes” & “tree huggers”

#SundayMorning #SundayFunday #SundayThoughts
2/ In a 2009 email to @TSN_Sports & Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) Campbell seeks counsel in an apparent desire to help remove fighting from the game: “I hated fighting . . . had to do it though . . . particularly in the 70’s, but it is stupid.”
3/ And then, four years later, in an email to fellow TSN correspondent Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) Colin Campbell writes he is, in fact, “for fighting.”

#BullyingAwarenessWeek

The year is 2002-2003 I am 17 turning 18 yrs old & it’s my @NHL draft year

I moved away from home, family & friends, to play hockey in the @OHLHockey for the @StingHockey
I endured daily bullying/abuse at the hands of veteran players

Below is my story...
2/ Moving away from everyone you’ve ever known is hard

Living with strangers is, well, strange

Going to a new high school isn’t easy

Daily practices, workouts, long travel times for games are grueling

Playing against 21 yr olds when you are 17 is intimidating

Having your...
3/ teammates beat you on a daily basis with the sawed off paddle of a goaltender’s hockey stick, takes both a physical & mental toll on a teenager

I remember being so confused at the beginning of the yr

I remember thinking to myself, “If this is part of the process, just shut

We all get older. It’s an unavoidable fact. Sports fans are no exception. We grow up and we grow old. Unfortunately, so do our heroes. The life of a sports fan, measured by their heroes, has a few major milestones that mark our cycle. #mlb #nba #nfl #nhl #wnba #usmnt #uswnt 1/17
#1 - Establishing a Hero
Think back: Once you were the starry-eyed child. You watched on the television or, hopefully, someone took you to a game. There you were amazed by what that one guy or girl did. How can he run so fast? Did you see that pass? 2/17
Someone did something that made you take notice. You were amazed, in awe. Maybe it was Sandy Koufax's control, Mike Schmidt's power, Walter Payton's finesse, or Sue Bird's control of the court. Something made you become a sports fan and you wouldn't want that to change. 3/17

1/ If u have played the game the way I have, this clip is not that difficult to break down. Notice Wilson’s right skate before or at the initial point of contact. It is leaving the ice intentionally, which means he thrusts his body into an upward direction, which is towards the
2/ head of Reese. If we look at the left skate during the point of contact, Wilson is rising up onto his toe, as if he is trying to jump, hence the reason he ended up sitting on the dasher of his own bench after the hit. It is clear that Reese sees Wilson coming but that has very
3/ little to do with the fact that Wilson clearly makes contact with the head/jaw of Reese, in direct result of jumping and thrusting his body in an upward motion. Bc of this, we have a human being who may get the right diagnosis of a #concussion yet will he receive the treatment
