See results of NJ and NYC. Much closer than what anyone paid attention to and the results are this way despite CRT not being a hot button issue in NJ/NYC.

Tonight in VA is more than culture wars.
NJ is close (for now).
The problem in NJ for the GOPer is that no one gave him a chance, so plenty GOPers didn’t even bother to vote. The narrative of a win can create the win such as in VA. I have no numbers on the ground from NJ. Just observing how things are now.

looking at all important races in the country: What are your top indicators for "wow, Dems are besting expectations" vs "this night is a GOP triumph"?
My pick for GOP may be #NJGov or control of LI counties. Better answer in terms of right-wing power may be how much they flip school boards, but that'll take a while to decipher.

My pick for Dems wld be a gain on PA Supreme Court; wld certainly offset received wisdom on turnout.
This conceals that many of the night's defining elections are ideological conflicts within the Dem coalition: Boston & surroundings, Buffalo, Minneapolis, Seattle, #FL20, referendums in St Paul, Boulder, Tucson...

First up, everyone’s favorite, the big race for #VAgov between @terrymcauliffe and @glennyoungkin! This one is shaping up to be a real nail-biter: polls in VA close at 7 pm, and we should hopefully get some interesting results tonight businessinsider.com/virginia-gover…
Less-discussed about also fascinating is the Virginia Lt. Gov race between @HalaAyala and @WinsomeSears, who have been running on very difficult platforms & visions for VA — either candidate will also be the first woman of color elected statewide businessinsider.com/virginia-lt-go…

Two Congressional special elections are being held in Ohio today to fill two of three vacancies in the House. Democrats currently have an 8-seat voting majority with 220 members; Republicans have 212.
Voters in #OH15 House district, which spans from Columbus suburbs to Athens, will choose between Democratic state Rep. Allison Russo & Republican coal lobbyist Mike Carey to replace fmr. 6-term GOP Rep. Steve Stivers, who resigned in May to become OH Chamber of Commerce Pres. & CEO.
Russo was endorsed by President Biden and Carey by former President Trump in this #OH15 House special election race.

68.02/ This is right in my wheelhouse: scholarship laden pop-culture analysis. This is of #Dune

68.03/ #Dune is an incredibly flawed book that's nonetheless fascinating. Also, as a kid I thought the (pseudo) Arabic was Hebrew. e.g. "Kwisatz Haderach" which I eventually recognized from Midrash (from last week's parsha! God "shortened Eliezer's way"):

Thread: This clip re the #VAgov race has an interview w/ a white woman claims "there's not a lot of racism" in Loudon County & (unironically) that "if you talk about it less you're gonna notice [it] less."

I'm a white woman who disagrees with her take.

I know there's a damaging and unacceptable level of racist behavior in every county of the US (and FWIW in every part of my own country, NZ.) Logically, the level of it in the state of VA would be above average for the US.

Rs are being blatantly obvious in their racism now.
My understanding of the level of racism in the GOP has changed over the past 5 years. It was more well hidden.

Yes, racism from one group to another can be found among Rs and Ds. This thread is about racism toward African Americans, as the largest group affected.

On what Dems could take away:

"If a Biden-like message offered by McAuliffe doesn't succeed in purple VA... [Dems] around the country will wonder if it makes more sense to chart a more independent course," said Stephen Farnsworth, a polisci professor at Univ. of Mary Washington.
On what GOP can take away:
"If Youngkin manages to pull this off-- it's because he basically walked a spider web across two really tall buildings. One of those buildings is the base of the [GOP] that loves everything about Donald Trump, and the other one- is suburban moderates."
