This morning’s NY Times referenced data from The Educational Opportunity Project

They've charted the change in average reading scores since the pandemic

Each dot is a school district

Higher dot, reading performance improved.
Lower dot, reading performance worsened. Image
3/?

The highlighted bubbles represent the 10 largest districts in the US (NY did not have data)

Higher bubbles = Students have done better in reading since the pandemic

Lower bubbles = Students have done worse in reading since the pandemic

Guess which one is Clark County… Image

🚧 CAUTION 🚧

CCSD released its new transparency dashboards yesterday.

We applaud transparency, but it must be meaningful, not just numbers on a website.

Proceed with CAUTION, the data does not come with any context.

Let’s bring some context to the data. A thread 🧵
1/?
#NVed Image
2/?

First, let's look at staffing, the MOST IMPORTANT issue in #NVed

The dashboard has staffing counts. That's nice.

You just can’t compare it to anything.
Not even another school year.

Let’s bring some context to this data… Image
3/?

CCSD has been hemorrhaging teachers.

All the staffing gains that were made after the Great Recession have been wiped out! Image

🚨 Data Investigation 🚨

Tonight, the CCSD Board will be meeting for the evaluation of Superintendent Jesus Jara.

The data they will review is so bad it even shocked us.

They don’t even address the elephant in the room.

Let’s take a look…

Student Proficiency

Look at all that green! Isn’t it amazing!

NO mention that only 54% of students participated in the test last year.

Let’s try looking at a different comparison w/ more context…
#DataInvestigation
3/?

Did you know before Jara was Supt, CCSD had a HIGHER 3rd-grade proficiency rate than the rest of Nevada?

It’s true!

But not anymore.

Why wasn’t this mentioned in the evaluation?
The other schools in Nevada went through the same pandemic.

First up, 3rd Grade Math

@WashoeSchools making it look easy and taking half of the 10 top spots in the state!

Drake has stolen the crown from @PAN_Inspirada who led the state in 3rd grade math last year.

Congrats to all!

4th Grade Math

These schools all have proficiency rates over double the state average. Unbelievable!

Pro Tip: Never compete in a 4th grade Mathletics competition for money against Pinecrest

🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

On Thursday @ClarkCountySch will present an update on teacher vacancies to the Board.

The presentation is EXTREMELY misleading.
This thread explains how.

Here's the 1st chart on teacher/licensed staff counts in CCSD's presentation

Look at the chart & see if it conveys the BIGGEST headlines about CCSD's teacher workforce
#IntentionalChoices
3/?

Hard to see here, but CCSD "analysts" added a flat dotted line to make it look like staffing hasn’t changed in 6 years.

They chose to add that line.

🚨BREAKING🚨

CCSD’s latest teacher separation report is out.

This is what the cumulative teacher/licensed staff separations look like in a typical year for CCSD.

They slowly accumulate August through March and then accelerate April through July when staff start to say they’re not coming back next year.
#AverageAttrition
3/?

Last year CCSD saw the lowest teacher separations through February of any school year in the last decade.

After the vaccine came out separations accelerated, and separations ended the year above average.

What does it look like this year…

From Aug. through Jan. there have been 67% more licensed/teaching staff separations than a typical year over the same time period.

Almost 300 more than the next highest year!

There is a MUCH BIGGER difference between licensed staff quitting this year and the next highest year than between the next highest year and the lowest year over the last decade!

There is an unprecedented exit of teachers from CCSD this year!

WARNING: Long Thread

We’ve shared a lot of data about Supt Jara's leadership of CCSD regarding:

1. Broken Trust
2. Teacher Exodus

This thread attempts to address the context some have said we’re missing

Let's add some context...

1/?
#NVed #CCSD
2/?
TRUST

The community has not trusted CCSD for years, well before Jara became Supt.

Trust was so bad in 2015, Gov. Sandoval signed legislation to break up CCSD.

This ultimately became what is now called the Reorg Law (NRS 388G.500)
3/?
In June-October 2018 Superintendent Jara did a listening tour throughout our community.

We were impressed at how well he inserted himself into our community so quickly.

A key takeaway he had from 5 months of listening:

- We must build public trust

🔍🔍Data Investigation 🔎🔎

After not sharing parent & staff feedback on the Districtwide survey for over a year, CCSD finally posted some old data.

Let’s investigate to see what they may have been hiding from the public!

1/?
#NVed #CCSD Image
2/?
Posting survey results on their website is required of CCSD by Nevada law.

We originally called them out for this in December 2020.

#WheresTheData #ComplianceDefiance Image
3/?
We called CCSD out again in Aug. of 2021

They still had not posted results for 2019-20
nor 2020-2021

By law, the results from the prior school year are to be posted by the start of the following school year

e.g., 2020-21 results posted by Aug 9, 2021.

2/?
We’re in the 3rd month of the school year & 664 teachers/licensed staff have announced they're leaving CCSD.

- 66% more than a typical year
- 31% more than the next highest year
3/?
It’s rare that an employee is so frustrated w/ CCSD that they say they are leaving because they’re “Dissatisfied with the District”

In a typical year at this point, less than 6 teachers/licensed staff have left for this reason.

Let’s see what it looks like this year…

When Jara's contract was renewed & he said we need to focus on stability, did anybody tell him what that means?

Because CCSD just lost more principals & admin last school year than ever!

Smashing the previous record set the prior year under Supt Jara!
3/?
2019-20 school year saw a record number of administrators leave CCSD.

Jara’s response… let’s PAY more to leave.

Last year CCSD paid for principals/administrators to retire early, and they took the money & ran!

Just how bad was this operational move...

It’s time to talk about the elephant in the room.

CCSD executive leadership is failing our children.

More vacancies at the start of the year than the 2017 & 2018 school years COMBINED!

Thread: When everyone celebrated the $500 million “increase” for #NVed K-12, we started crunching numbers. When the budget bill showed discrepancies we started to investigate. In the end, we have concerns over the proposed per-pupil funding outcomes. 1/4
It’s important to clearly communicate funding details and help manage expectations. So far it seems the $500 million is mostly a RESTORATION of cuts which is important, but people need to know schools are NOT receiving a “huge” increase in funding. So we have questions: 2/4
Q1: Do all the budget items that make up the Total Public Support in the K-12 funding bill match the budget items in the 2019 funding bill? If so, why is there a decrease in funding? If not, why is the bill language identical? 3/4

Education is a human relationship business.

Relationships built on honesty, trust, and respect.

How important is it that your Superintendent can build those relationships with all constituents?

It is true ACT results were released this week and Nevada had the lowest score of all the states that test 100% of their students.

But something seems fishy here??? #NVed
3/?
How's it possible they are doing so much better than NV when just 4 yrs earlier when leaving 8th grade NV was near the middle of the pack when we look at results from the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) the most important test in the US???

The NAEP data actually has some good news for #nved, @ClarkCountySch. Fourth grade reading scores are up. It's from a low starting point, but this is good, especially if it continues. Image
Nevada had the second highest score increase in the nation. Not quite high enough to be significant, but if this continues, it's really good news. Image
Still not sure why @ClarkCountySch would highlight students above basic in its release. They have legitimate good news to report. Image

.@cceanv's podcast on their strike threat is telling. Vellardita acknowledges that striking is illegal, but doesn't think @SuptJaraCCSD and the board will have the guts to stop them. #nved #nvleg soundcloud.com/user-797904577…
Even while taking a vote, CCEA is laying groundwork not to strike. Says they'll strike if budget is cut. // With an increase in local funds, it's unlikely CCSD will cut anything. Real question is if CCEA will strike when it doesn't get a substantial increase in #nvleg funding.
Also ironic, CCEA doesn't just require any form of ID for folks to vote. They want the last four of a member's Social Security Number. Image
