1/ Its time to have an honest discussion about the effects of increasing the validator set in #Cosmos chains.

Let's talk Centralization!

$OSMO $JUNO and $STARS holders, may find this shocking.

If you're a Cosmonaut, this is for you 🧵 Image
2/ I asked YOU if increasing the validator set led to decentralization of the ecosystem...

A resounding 68% said YES!

Many of you were thoughtful enough to comment and add to the discussion.

Let's dig into the numbers!
3/ We will focus on 2 variables:

The #Nakamoto Coefficient which is:
👉The number of nodes needed to slow down or disrupt the blockchain from operating.

Kurtosis which is:
👉The distribution of voting power of the network

Ethereum just moved to #PoS but #Avalanche and its C-Chain have been PoS for ~2 years. So, what's the big deal?

How does $AVAX PoS work?
How does its consensus algo differ from what ETH just implemented?
And can #Avalanche truly have a million+ validators one day??
The Avalanche network doesn’t use just one consensus mechanism but rather a collection of consensus protocols.

What is the Primary Network?

A three-chain (X, P, and C) system that segregates the work done by the overall network.
This enables more efficient use of network resources & the ability to process more txs simultaneously.

Avalanche’s primary network consists of three governing blockchains with diff consensus algos:

Platform (P)-Chain
Exchange (X)-Chain
Contract (C)-Chain

Initially, #IOTA was designed with the IoT in mind - lightweight, highly scalable, no transaction fees, parallel transactions, no miners.

Turns out this is also a great technical basis for every other scenario as well.

Since 17/18 a lot of things have happened:
The project is one of the most ambitious in the whole DLT space. The aim is so high that some don't believe it's possible: "scam" "garbage" etc. And 18/19 was a valley of despair. There were technical misconceptions and unnecessary dirty laundry.
Also - research is not a straight road - no organization has ever researched a feeless DLT system based on a DAG.

But the team took all the learning from the past and redesigned a whole new system with the same principles in mind. The birth of the current #Chrysalis network.

1/ Up next in #cryptothoughts, in which I take a closer look at some of the projects in the crypto/blockchain space that have me beyond excited, is @nano. I've been wanting to cover #nano for a while now, as this project truly embodies what the #crypto & #blockchain ethos is all
2/ about. One of the fastest-rising crypto-assets throughout the broader ecosystem, #nano takes the problem of sending money in a cheap, quick, & secure way & flips the concept on its head. With zero fees (I repeat, ZERO fees), Nano is infinitely cheaper to transact with than
3/ other crypto-assets, let alone the price gouging traditional wiring services. And on top of that, transactions are completed faster than two people sending messages over WhatsApp. And my favorite part, there is absolutely no incentive to move towards a centralized model. Is

One key area of research I'm doing with #cassandra is testing hybridization of deterministic & probabilistic consensus models.

Successfully doing so would provide an almost "best of both worlds" type model.

...
Probabilistic (#nakamoto) has strong liveness guarantees but is never really safe.

Deterministic (classical) guarantees safety but is difficult to resolve both liveness and safety issues. Usually requiring some #godmode
The #cassandra approach has 2-phases.

The 1st phase is probabilistic promoting liveness to a strong guarantee.

The 2nd phase receives the output of the 1st phase and produces a classical 2f+1 safety threshold.
