Limbe Senior Resident Magistrate Byson Masonga yesterday convicted and sentenced Isaac Mpinga, 25, and Precious Kalamula, 20, each to three years imprisonment with hard labour for kidnapping a 14-year-old boy of Indian origin.
State prosecutor Ernest Mangwena told the court that the convicts, together with others, on June 30 2022, attacked the victim near Y.A. Bhana building in Limbe and later took him to a nearby bush before calling his father demanding a ransom of K6 million.
Mangwena told the court that after negotiations, K1 Million was sent to them before the boy was dumped at Makhetha in Machinjiri Township.

The two were later apprehended by police on July 7 2022 and charged with Kidnapping. They appeared in court where they pleaded guilty.

Reports reaching Nation Online indicate that Centre for Democracy and Economic Development (Cdedi) executive director Sylvester Namiwa has been picked by unknown people.
According to Cdedi communications officer Edwin Mauluka the incident happened around Area three in Lilongwe, 45 minutes after Namiwa and other human rights activists held a joint press conference at Crown Hotel.
During the briefing the activists reaffirmed the planned nationwide demonstrations scheduled for tomorrow.

Delivering his closing speech at the National Anti-Corruption Conference conference, President Lazarus Chakwera says corruption is Malawi's biggest enemy and is not welcome.
Chakwera says this should be the key message from now till December during the anti-corruption campaign which he set to launch after the conference.
He says the campaign is important stressing that corruption is not an opportunity but an adversary whose intention is to harm the nation.

President Lazarus Chakwera is today expected to launch an anti-corruption campaign at the end of the two-day National Anti-Corruption Conference at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
The conference has brought together numerous stakeholders from the media, clergy, politicians, and academia, among others. On its second day, the stakeholders have been holding breakaway sessions where they have been discussing their commitments to the fight against corruption.
Meanwhile, Chakwera is scheduled to deliver his closing address this afternoon before launching the anti-corruption campaign.

Power Market Limited (PML) chief executive officer (CEO) Rosemary Mkandawire has obtained an injunction at the High Court in Lilongwe restraining the office of Ombudsman from conducting a public inquiry into alleged irregular recruitment of PML top management, including the CEO.
Judge Yakuwawa Msiska in a ruling dated July 22 2022, which Nation Online has seen, has directed that the inquiry be pended until the court hears the defendants notice to apply for judicial review on August 1 2022.
Ombudsman Grace Malera was scheduled to hold a public inquiry with representatives of Escom Staff Union (ESU) and Comptroller of Statutory Corporation from July 26 2022 in Blantyre.

President Lazarus Chakwera says the two-day National Anti-Corruption Conference must define the role of each and every stakeholder in the fight against corruption.
In his speech delivered at the conference, Chakwera has stressed that from the conference, there must be new approaches to the fight against corruption that will require concerted efforts.
He has since appreciated efforts by the Anti-Corruption Bureau and Ministry of Justice for making the idea of having the conference a reality to enable Malawians discuss better approaches to the fight against corruption.

Ombudsman report has faulted former MEC Chairperson Jane Ansah and former Attorney General Kalekeni Kaphale in the manner they procured the service of South African lawyers to represented it in the Presidential Election Case.
The Ombudsman has also faulted how government through then Chief Secretary Lloyd Muhara illegally appointed lawyer Madalitso Mmeta as Board Chairperson of Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets (PPDA) who in turn bulldozed the contract of the lawyers.
The Ombudsman has consequently ordered Ansah and Kaphale to refund each K3 million which the Commission spent on the lawyers when they were in the country.

#NationOnline Government has issued new restrictions to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic following continued rise of cases in he country.

In the past 24 hours, the country has registered 83 new COVID-19 cases, six new recoveries,
and two new deaths.
This brings the total number of confirmed infection in the country to 2069, with 31 deaths.
The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 said in a statement signed by co-chairperson John Phuka that among others, govt has with immediate effect suspended entertainment gatherings, weddings and other social gatherings and imposed restrictions on religious and funeral gatherings.
