#Thread. ‘Handlooms are so expensive’ lament women who splurge on fancy shoes but have price issues about Handloom. For #NationalHandloomDay, showcasing the #sutaluga, a pocket friendly weave of Odisha! #MyHandloomMyPride @TexMinIndia @HTH_Odisha @odisha_tourism @PiyushGoyal
Badabag in Jagatsinghpur district of #Odisha is home to the slightly coarse cotton single Ikat sarees known simply as #sutaluga meaning ‘cotton saree’ in Oriya. These sarees were once the daily wear sarees for most women in Odisha #MyHandloomMyPride @odisha_tourism @arunbothra
Even today, these sarees carry a modest price tag that ranges between 800 - 2000 rupees. Woven using extra weft motifs and single ikat borders and pallus, #sutaluga sarees are elegant and drape well. This is a typical sutaluga pallu. @odisha_tourism @arunbothra #MyHandloomMyPride

Its one day after #NationalHandloomDay, I'm going to mirror what @prasannavika wrote about Pupul Jayakar - the one who started the All India Handicrafts Board.
"Pupul Jayakar was born in the year 1915 in Uttar Pradesh, India. It’s very hard when talking about such strong and prominent personalities, what to tell and what to leave.
Pupul Jayakar is called India’s “Cultural Tsarina”. When we speak about India’s handloom, handicrafts and cultural history in the post Independence era, it is impossible to not mention her.

#Thread. The Curious Case of Laila Tyabji’s Epic Meltdown. On the eve of #NationalHandloomDay, founder of Dastkar and textiles Prima Donna Laila Tyabji chose to rant about this govt’s decision of scrapping of the Handloom Board. SS attached. @TexMinIndia @smritiirani
In her rant, Ms. Tyabji alleged that d decision of scrapping the Handloom Board was taken by @TexMinIndia in the ‘quiet of Covid Times’, implying d govt had something to hide. She said how she ‘would have loved to be on that board’ and how it was a great institution. But was it?
Between 2005 - 2016, Handloom Board met precisely SIX times - in ELEVEN years. Meetings were held in five star hotels for half a day. There is no evidence of any policy decisions nor any recommendations made. In other words, the board was another @INCIndia era white elephant.

This #NationalHandloomDay I want to share the story behind a project I started in May - Cinnabar. I’m extremely grateful for the love & patronage we’ve got so far. 2020 is a really tough year. I request to continue supporting the artisans & make handmade a part of your lifestyle.
Say whatever about Twitter, you can find genuine inspiration here. This article is what motivated me to go to #Chanderi. I also met some of the people mentioned here & learned that they’d already received some help from the readers..thanks to @mohitmrao
ruralindiaonline.org/articles/mp-we…
Mohit was also prompt in sharing his contacts with me. With his help, I met Dilshad who took us to some houses close by. While walking, Dilshad said something that stayed with me. He said they really appreciate the free ration & donations but how long can this be sustained..

A #Thread for #NationalHandloomDay #Vocal4Handmade 5 reasons why you should buy, wear and use handwoven textiles. 1)Handloom sector employs second largest number of people in India after agriculture. Each time you buy a hand-woven textile, you are supporting rural economy.
2) Handloom weaving is the original #MakeInIndia craft. People in Sindhu Saraswati civilisation knew how to cultivate cotton, how to extract yarn, how to dye it using natural colours and how to weave cloth, as seen from the shawl with the trefoil pattern of the priest king.
3) Rigveda has several hymns that refer to the process of weaving. In this Richa, weaving is used as a metaphor to pursue the lit path of knowledge. तन्तुं तन्वन रजसो भानुमिन्विहि, ज्योतिष्मतः पथो रक्ष धिया कृतान |

Today is #NationalHandloomDay. Handwoven textiles are the original #MakeInIndia product. The handloom sector employs the second largest no of people in India after agriculture, in weaving as well as in ancillary activities like dyeing, spinning, setting up the loom, starching etc
Every state in India has its own tradition of hand-woven textiles. The known history of Indian hand-woven textiles goes back to almost 5000 years, and many of the weaves are still continuing to be woven in an unbroken, living tradition. #NationalHandloomDay #HandloomTwitter
People from the Sindhu-Saraswati civilzation has mastered weaving weaving. A madder-dyed scrap of fabric found at Mohenjo-Dado proves that our people knew the art of growing cotton, spinning yarn, weaving cloth as well as dyeing yarn using natural colours. #NationalHandloomDay
