I'm going to try to do one more thread today on masking vs vaccination as primary tool against delta and then I am planning to let it go (for the weekend at least.) I know almost no one agrees with me and almost no one wants to hear it.
Despite the fact that our government and media are pretending the pandemic is over currently there are more Americans hospitalized for Covid then EVER. EVEN IF this policy focus on vaccination resulted in people rushing to get vaccines it would take at least 5 weeks for effect.
In contrast to vaccines, lockdowns and mask mandates have immediate effect. We SHOULD have a #NationalLockdown but at the very least schools should be closed and we should have a #NationalMaskMandate. The government should provide free grade 95 masks and fine noncompliance.

[HAPPENING NOW] Minister in the Presidency @JacksonMthembu_ opens a briefing now by the National Command Council on #coronavirus. He indicates the remarks to follow will provide further detail on level three regulations. He introduces Minister of COGTA Dr Nkosazana @DlaminiZuma.
Dlamini-Zuma says 84 days have lapsed since the first identified case of #coronavirus in South Africa and since then South Africa has been "led by the steady hand" of the President. She names scientists, among others, who have provided input.
"We have also benefited from the overwhelming support we have received from ordinary South Africans," says Dlamini-Zuma. She says they have "largely heeded the call to stay at home" and complied by washing hands, wearing masks, social distancing, etc.

I totally support the PM for his 21 day lockout order. However, 744 million Indians earn 44 Rs a day; 91% of our labour force is in the informal sector. It was imperative to announce a package and cash transfer.

#Lockdown21 is a necessity, and every Indian supports the PM on it. But in the quest for social distancing, India should not distance herself from those who aren't infected but will suffer most because of corona.

From Delhi to Aligarh, Sirsaganj to Kanpur, Anand Vihar to Badaun, Ahmedabad to Jaisalmer, Chandigarh to Balrampur, thousands of daily wage labourers are walking, hundreds of miles, with their families, a potli on one shoulder, a child on the other…India is on the move.
(MORTALITY RATE) Mortality rate is determined by closed cases—of which we now have 112,173. The global rate has been rising—5% to 13%—for weeks, as more folks are tested. It may eventually decline again—but my source is the same as that used by THE WASHINGTON POST (Worldometers).
PS/ I am—to put it mildly—sick and tired of being lectured by those who don't know how mortality rate is calculated that the 13% figure is "wrong." It is—of course—*not final*, but it's *not* wrong, no matter how much you wish it to be. So commenters here need to slow their roll.
PS2/ As millions and millions *more* people have been tested, the mortality rate has *risen* dramatically—so don't come on the feed and assure folks the mortality rate will drop with more testing. It certainly *may*—perhaps even "likely will"—but we don't have evidence of it yet.
America may well have—*just today*—10,000 new coronavirus cases and 100+ new coronavirus fatalities. This means that *today in America* may be the *worst day* for *new* coronavirus cases over the whole duration of this worldwide pandemic. It's *past time* for a #NationalLockdown.
PS/ A #NationalLockdown would still allow people to go to the grocery store, bank, pharmacy, doctor's office, and hospital. And obviously essential personnel—first responders, USPS, some food deliverers—would be able to go outside. But otherwise, folks would need to stay indoors.
IMPORTANT UPDATE/ As I wrote this—over just a matter of minutes—the daily coronavirus infection figure in the United States jumped from well under 10,000 to *13,931*. Folks, we're running out of time for a #NationalLockdown. It has to happen *right now*. The president *must* act.
